My dog Lotty is my inspiration and keeps me going. I wouldn't be here without her for sure. She has helped me through the darkest times. Your dogs are lovely and another reason to keep fighting :) xx

We've always had dogs in the house up until we had to have the last one put to sleep about three years ago. Ours were always Cavalier King Charles spaniels, lovely dogs if a bit scatty and prone to all kind of conditions as they get older.

My wife developed a fear of dogs following a loose Doberman jumping up at her in the street a couple of years ago so a new dog of our own seemed unlikely. However she relented a few months ago and said we could look for a new dog. I didn't want to go through puppy training so we decided to look for a rescue dog and went along to North Manchester rescue center to see what they had.

Well what they had was around 85% of Staffordshire Bull Terriers or SBT crosses. A huge change from what we'd previously had and for someone scared of dogs a real scary proposition. We looked at them and one of them really caught my eye. He was super confident, wasn't yapping or jumping up at the bars, he just walked over to us sat down and stared at us with his big black eyes. I reckon he was doing some kind of Vulcan mind meld as he just stole my heart right there and then and made it impossible for me to consider another dog.

We asked about him and he was a stray who they knew nothing about, he was believed to be around five years old and his kennel number was 515, hence we decided to call him Fiver. Now a 45lb pure muscle and bone Staffie with no known history other than the two weeks he'd been locked up was a very risky gamble, and add in Val's fear of dogs and we had a recipe for disaster so we decided to take a couple of days to think it over, "But he might be gone when you come back" said the handler, well said I if he's gone it wasn't meant to be I guess. Anyway my daughter went to see him three days later and just came home with him

He has been a simply fantastic find. He is the best behaved dog we've ever had and has been so well trained by his previous owner he is a pleasure to own. The best dog we've ever had and even Val has lost her fear and simply adores him just like the rest of us. He is the softest most loving and loyal dog you could ever wish for and we love him to bits

That is soo lovely, Some staffies are just adorable and not bad dogs at all like some people think, They are loving and caring, sadly the few people who turn them into aggressive dogs ruin it for the breed who are just willing to please and loyal.. My youngest is a rescue dog, but she is scared sadly of new people, when we first saw her and picked her up she was all bones you could see her ribs, it was so upsetting, but once she knows you she adores you completely.. I would really recommend previously owned dogs to anyone :D

I love staffies too. I get to see all types of dogs at work and we never have any problems with them. Peoples perceptions of some animals are strange. I'm firm believer in no bad dog, just bad owners.

I've said before Karlos how lovely your story is with Fiver, he is a gorgeous dog and it's great you were able to give him a good home and he seems to have returned the favour :)

This is my baby Lotty. She is a lab/border collie she is 9 and half and still acts like a puppy despite quite bad arthritis, I do everything I can to try let her have those puppy moments. Hydrotherapy is next on the list :) Rescued her as a puppy as she was one of 11 and mistake. Had to take her on early as her poor mother was only a year old and very ill from have so many so young. We helped find homes for all the other puppies too and have occasionally met her siblings out and about. If you look at the photo of her running, that is her at her happiest, hence working hard to manage her arthritis so she can still enjoy the outdoors :)

Aww she is cute, my eldest who is 11 is a Retriever cross Labrador/spaniel has puppy times now and then, it is soo lovely to see him like that again..

I sometimes feel like I bad owner, because my youngest dog who we got at 4/5 months old, is really nervous around new people, especially men, she even hates it when myself or my husband pick up a hammer.. I have tried so many things to try and help he become less scared, but the vets have only ever said just sedate her.. even for vet visits, to me that is not helping at all..
she is 4 soon and she is getting slightly better as she gets older. But I think she will always wait for people to prove themselves before she trusts them

Change vets if I were you and if it's possible. That isn't normal practice, sedation should be last thing you do, not the first. There are natural alternatives to help if you haven't tried them. Sprays and diffusers such as adaptil and pet remedy help some dogs and there are some natural non prescription tablets called zylkene that you can by online or get from pet shops and vets. Just open up the capsule and sprinkle it on their food. It's completely naturally and doesn't interfere with any other medications etc. I know people who swear by them. Some vets hold socialisation classes and even have dvds they lend with noise desensitisation so that could be something worth trying. Try looking around if you can, she is still young and has plenty of time to learn new more post behaviours so she is happier and then you will be too :) You're not a bad owner, you wouldn't care if you were! :) x

Had to share! This is Poppy, she is a 2 year old collie/lab. She is the friendliest and silliest dog you could ever meet!

She is beautiful! Collie/lab is the most wonderful combination - energy beyond imagination but the most soft, gentle and sweet side you can too. Mine is exactly the same :) x

Hi I have never been into dogs but we got Snoop in July. A working cocker spaniel. He is nuts but I love him. And it's kicked off an exercise routine. We goto the park daily for over an hour. Today I have been walking in the hills. I could barely breath going uphill. We have never been outside as much! It's funny how you can go from spending so much time shopping to now worrying about dog walking! They are so loyal. X
