Don't know if any one read the Sunday mirror yesterday, centre pages,it was about a woman who had a gastric bypass, apparently she is wasting away, only has a packet of crisps and a half slice of toast a day and she's losing about half a pound a week and can't stop, what are your thoughts on it guys?

I know of a lad who had his op at the same place as me can only eat 4 bourbon biscuits a day & drink diet coke & can't stop losing seems all things & bloods are ok they think he's in the 1% who it goes to far for.

It could be something to do with what they are eating. Crisps, bourbon biscuits and diet coke should be off limits post bypass surely?

For me this is just what gives bariatric surgery a bad name. If I was really critical I would even call it an abuse. This is basic bad nutrition for any human being. They need help just as much as the next person. It may be they can't eat or won't - physical & or psychological but need to seek help either way. This will cause long term issues with their health.
I struggle to eat & can honestly go without food as never hungry anymore but I know I mustn't. It would be very easy for me to just eat a tiny amount of fatty sugary high carb food but I don't. Given I can only eat a tiny amount I still try to get a high protein source into me as first point of call & my fluids.

It is abuse. My GP warned about both ends. Realistically if that's all he can physically eat they would have done a stretch. So he mentally is choosing not to.

Okay I have read the article and I think its slightly misrepresented. I think she has too severe malabsorption. Shelbell on here is another person who has - its not how much she's eating as she seems to be saying she's eating regular meals, just that she's still losing weight alarmingly fast. That's a very different scenario. Severe malabsorption is a potential complication of the bypass.

I have not seen it but think she has a few mental problems she should be following a diet from the dietician and should be asking them for advice may be she is crying out for help
But then I don't believe all what I read in the tabloids

The article suggests that this is what she can eat in a sitting and she's having to eat fatty foods to stop losing.

Well I am just pleased then that my weight loss is really slowed down now, n I know that my body is ok. I don't think my body will go down much further, I am 15st 3 now and would like to be arpund 14 but would be nice lower but dont htink i'll get that low, am quite happ where i am at mo looking good am proud of myself, look lighter than what i am. xx

Even if you are malabsorbing - why oh why would you eat only such **** food!!

Even if you are getting a nano of goodness from what you are eating - the choices are all wrong. I agree with you guys this is the kind of story that gives WLS a bad name.

Heaven forbid they would try such things as a protein shake with ground seed powder or something else with a lot of goodness in it!

Uuummm, I think the article said she was losing about 1/2lb per week (correct me ifi am wrong), but that's what we're aiming for aren't we?? It says she has to ave sugery tea just to stop feeling faint, but surely if she introduced protein into her diet, she would start to progress. I think they've taken the extremes of the situation and just reported on the bad stuff. As others have said, gives surgery a bad reputation she needs to see her dietician and follow their advise, and stop eating rubbish surely??

I disagree if she is losing 1/2 a lb that far out eating nothing but carbs and fat. Protein would make her shed weight faster

I don't know yve, I bow to your knowledge on this. To be honest I don't know the rhymes and reasonings about the whole protein thing, and just reading things just confuses me more. But surely it can't e good for her to eat nothing but fat and suger???

Really do think she needs to contact her dietician or at least her doctors there are far better things to eat and to help her gain weight
There are build up drinks or the doctor my prescribe forty sips they are a good weight builder give you all your nutrients in one drink or even the peg fed purees if worst happens

I know people who have lost there whole stomach and lots off intestine through cancer and are holding a stable weight Also a friend I know is peg fed and he cannot eat through his mouth and he maintains a good weight
So I think the paper have gone over board just to slag off all those hard working wls people who really give 110% and try there best

Agree. Something is drastically wrong. I reiterate this gives WLS a bad rep!

I have to say, having read a lot of Shelbells posts regarding her weight loss and her difficulties keeping her weight up its just not that simple if you do have a malabsorption complication. As Shel once said, she has full restriction but has to somehow get 3200 cals into a day in order to maintain. Imagine trying to eat that much. Its not as simple as 'she's got to eat healthy'.

And no, its not good for her and she acknowledges this herself. But neither is dropping below a BMI of 19.

I would think that eating toast is not a very good decision as its harder to digest,so doesn't that mean that you can't get as much food into your stomach as you would like?to me she seams a bit anorexic now which I suppose could be a side effect of restrictive eating!
