Good luck Andy, the nerves are the worst the night before mine I hardly slept, the surgeons were brilliant explaining everything they were doing and why. Am sure that you will be fine. x

Day 8

Felt really uncomfortable today and not really up to doing much at all.

Went into our local town as I had to go to the bank, I parked my car about 400 yards from where I needed to go, I posted a letter, called in at the Docs and then went to the Bank. When I got to the counter felt really hot and clammy luckily the teller was pretty quick and I headed back to my car.

I am not sure if its the strain of driving or the fact that I am on such low calories thats making me feel hot and clammy or just my body telling me that I have done too much??

Hubby is still persevering on the soups with me, although he is feeling very tired have told him to eat at work, but he is happy to carry on with me as he is seeing results as he has lost a stone too.

Day 9

Didn't venture out today as the weather is quite atrocious at the moment.

Can now manage to wear my jeans buttoned up all the way as the bloating has now almost all gone and I don't feel 9 months pregnant anymore.

My dad has said that I look to have lost weight already saying that my face looks thinner and that I am looking slimmer too. It was my dad who lent me that last thousand that I needed for the op, so I am eternally grateful for that. It also is spurring me on as I don't want to let him down.

My friend also came around for a visit and she has been banded for just about 14 months. She originally lost 5 stone on Slimming World and then decided to have the banding done, which has prevented her from putting her weight back. She wishes that she had done it before she had lost the weight though.

When it was the year anniversary she went over to Turkey and had her boobs uplifted and reduced at the same time, she had a tummy tuck and also an inner thigh lift done all for £5000. She flew out herself and she says that she could not knock the service etc and was throughly pleased with the surgery.

She has however an underlying infection in her stomach for which she has been having NHS treatment for and is due to see the Surgeon again shortly in Leeds and if needs be she is going back under the knife again. Luckily she took out insurance for a year afterwards so it will be no extra cost for her.

Her weight is now around 12.5 stone. She is now a size 14/16 and is happy. She cannot remember as to when she was ever that size before and if she loses another stone then that would be the icing on the cake for her. She does not look as though she weighs 12.5 stone at all, but I know its an individual thing.

Sometimes we become too obssessed with what the scales say or the medical charts say that a healthy weight range for someone of my height is 9 stone to 11 stone. At a previous weight of 10 stone 4 (many moons ago!!) I was a size 10/12. This was far too skinny for me and I looked pale and gaunt. Pregnancy soon altered that though although it was strange when I was still wearing my skin tight size 12 jeans when I was 6 months pregnant - people used to ask 'are you sure your pregnant??'

Recently I was asked if I was pregnant? Hubby and I only got married 6 months ago, which in her minds eye could have been the reason we had got married. I hastily said no, its my daughter who is pregnant. My hubby said that his niece had said after only half listening to the conversation and not the fact that I looked pregnant...hmm I am not convinced.

Day 10

Slept a lot better than I have done for the past few days although I can't lay on my left side without experiencing any pain.

Feeling a lot less sore than yesterday although still have to resort to painkillers during the course of the day.

Hubby went to have his blood pressure checked today as he suffers with high blood pressure. He came back from the doctors and she told him that with the combination of the increased tablets and the fact that he had lost a stone means that his blood pressure is near normal !!!

He has to go for a review in 2 months but she has said that if has lost more weight and it stays down then they can look at reducing his meds .

Have had the usual smoothie and a half a can of spring vegetable soup didnt bother blitzing it as the food was pretty soft anyway just squashed any lumps up before I ate it.

To be honest am struggling with the soups now and can't wait to start back on sloppy foods which will be probably Sunday, yeah I know its a couple of days earlier but surely it can't harm?

My son is home for the weekend too, have told him that there isn't much in as we are both on the soups etc, he is out busy seeing his mates so hasn't eaten anything at home yet.

Tried on my biker jacket last night and it now fastens around my hips a lot easier which is a big bonus. We are taking part in a protest ride on Sunday so am hoping that I am up to doing it. If not hubby will be riding solo, but better get my harris into gear as we are going on holiday a week tomorrow....

Wow hadn't realised how long it had been since I had posted...long update...

Protest ride went brilliantly, was worried a bit about climbing on and off the bike but everything went really well and hubby was really gentle on the braking and accelerating.

I have been busy applying for jobs and that has taken up a lot of my time plus the fact that we have been away on holiday which was totally pants, weather was attrocious and we decided to cut it short by 3 days.

When we came home we both got weighed hubby had stayed the same although I had managed to put on 7.5 lb, we both had eaten the same on our holidays so I was really gutted but thought that I had been told that once you start eating 'proper' foods again then you could gain some weight and not to be too dispondent.

After a few days I got weighed again and found out that I had lost the 7.5 lbs and also had managed to lose another two which takes my total weight loss to 19lbs.

I had my appointment with the dietician last week and she says that my BMI is now 39 and that I had managed to lose 15% of my body weight, she went on to say that I had done really well and that I could expect to lose 50% of my total excess weight within 2 years which in effect would take me down to around 15.5 stone although for me to get to a healthy bmi of 25 my long term goal is 11 stone 11 (and to think when I weighed that much I felt fat..those were the days!!)

So bit nervous about having my first infill on Wednesday and are really not looking forwards to having fluids only for 3 days and then back to soft foods for 3 days....but know that this wasn't a short term fix but a long term commitment so bring it on.

Got on the scales this morning and have managed to put on 3.5lbs will be glad when I get on and the scales show a downward spiral instead of the fluctuation. Roll on the infill tomorrow!

1st Band fill

Went along to the Leeds Clinic for my appointment at 1.20pm. Was sat left waiting in the waiting room for around 15 minutes, never even apologised for been late.

This 'nurse' (was wearing a nurse's uniform) but would use the terms loosely...she held up this A4 size of paper showing yellow green and red sections and pointing saying this was where I was (yellow section -i.e. needing a band fill) this is where I should be green section i.e. feeling some restriction and eating smaller portions of meals etc and the red section was where I didn't want to be i.e. not being able to swallow saliva, drinks or vomiting, reflux etc.

I was then handed a DVD, was then asked to sign a form and initial parts of it. I was never told what this was for and as I was nervous and a little concerned then I didn't ask either. I was handed another 2 sheets of paper which I folded and put into my handbag I was never told that I should read it (although when I was sat drinking my tea afterwards clearly stated at the top that this should be read prior to signing consent forms). I was then told to lay down on what was a dentist chair. I lifted my top up and then 'Nurse' wiped my stomach, then started pressing and kneading my stomach as I am quite sore still I said 'ow!! that hurt', the response was 'you will be still tender from the operation!'

I was then told to put my hands behind my neck and lift my head off the dentist chair and she stuck this needle into me. I could have cried it was soooo painful. She then told me that I needed to go outside and have a drink and that if I needed a cold one then I would have to go upstairs for that. I went and made myself a peppermint tea as I felt quite faint, I managed to drink it okay and knocked back on the office door and she was on her iphone talking to someone else, I said that I had managed to drink my tea okay, she stuck her thumb up and said that she would see me at the next appointment.

I went back to meet my hubby (as I was parked at his office) he took one look at me as I was drip white and asked me what had gone on. I could have cried, I felt like a piece of meat, nothing was explained to me.

In the aftercare booklet that they had given me it said that at your first band infill you would have an xray which would include drinking a specially prepared drink to check on that positioning of the band and also to check that it was working okay. That you would need to take a drink with the needle still in place to check that you could swallow properly and that everything was as it should be. It also said that I should not eat anything for 4 hours prior to meeting as if my stomach was full then it was harder for them to carry out their checks, also that I could not drink anything for an hour prior to this.

None of that happened, no explanation as to why this wasn't carried out nothing. I am going to email them to complain about the treatment that I received yesterday or as to why it wasn't explained that I wouldn't be having an xray. Okay, I don't have any eal concerns at the moment but to have seen my banding on xray and know for certain that it is where it should be and that everything is working correctly would have put my mind at total peace.

Now it feels like they have had my money and can't be bothered anymore. I don't have any details of what the after care is either which I am really disappointed about too.

On the whole I wish I had gone to Weight Loss Group, I did consider going to them and did attend with my friend for her year checkup, one of my concerns at that time was having a needle stuck in my belly to do the infills, they even showed me the needle and it was the same size as the needle that I had to use when I first came home. This what she used yesterday was a huge needle and I am not exagerating at all.

'Nurse' put a dressing on it , she never told me how long I had to keep it on, she never checked my scars, or if she did she never even mentioned it to me, whether it was a visual check or not any kind of comment would have been better than nothing. When I took it off there was blood the size of a penny on it, hubby said that she had gone straight through my scar line.

It has made me even more nervous about going for my next infill which is next month.:(

On their scales I have lost a further 13.2 pounds since the surgery date which is a bonus, am back to the liquids only but don't feel like I have any restriction at all.

'Nurse' said that my band already had 1ml in but on my card it said that it was empty and the letter that I had to give to my GP also said it was empty.

Watched the DVD last night too its called the 8 golden rules...which goes on to totally confuse you as the dietician told me to have 3 small meals a day and not to go longer than 4 hours and if this could not be avoided then should eat a piece of fruit or a snack inbetween.

According to the DVD it doesn't matter if you don't have any breakfast and that you don't have to have 3 meals a day just to eat when you are hungry and not to have anything between your meals at all...totally confused.

Argh!!! I'm extremely nervous now!! I did know I wouldn't be having the X-ray fill as I asked about that when I had my first consultation, which they then told me they don't do that really anymore, I think most of the info in the booklet is outdated and that's not right when it is surgery we are having and needing their advice. It also says in the book we will see our surgeon again before the six months is up, bet that's not true either. I felt like I was on a production line at my initial consultants on. I even said see the next person then see me so that you are not rushing but they said no that's fine. As for the six month surgical cover, without them doing an actual check how will they know everything is ok??? I'm sure we would feel it if there was something not right, but what if it's started to slip or is too tight and we just don't know yet?
I hope you are feeling ok, I'm only nipping out in my lunch hour from work for my fill so I hope my experience isn't as bad as yours :-/ let us know what their response is! X

Lisa called me and I said what had happened she went on to explain that the booklets that had been produced were out of date and this is what is causing the confusion.

She apologised about the nurse been a bit rough and has rescheduled my next band infill to a different nurse on the 13th August.

I told Lisa that I had a hiatus hernia repaired at the same time as my banding and I said that the nurse should have been aware of this having read my notes before she started prodding my tummy. Lisa has said that maybe the infill should have been done in another couple of weeks to allow my insides to heal a bit more. I was also told that the needles are long as they need to go through stomach muscles etc. and that apparently there are two types of needle....

As for the xrays they don't carry them out anymore, when you are under the aneasthetic they take a picture of the banding in place, and they know that it is situated correctly etc from that. (Would have been nice to have been made aware of this).

Lisa has said that she will forward the email to the Nurse involved, and that usually she is really good with patients. Also that my email will be forwarded to someone else who deals with complaints.

I am not sure if they know that the booklets are out of date then why are they still giving them out - it is giving out misleading information and is causing further confusion.

Lisa told me that she wasn't aware of the DVD that was given out, I told her of what had been said at the dieticians appointment and also that she was not aware that I was dairy intolerant which all it takes is for nurse/dietician to read someones notes before they call/see them then this would have been avoided.

Lisa told me that I needed to be on liquids for 2 days and sloppy for 2 days, so again I had said that the dietician had said 3 and 3. Lisa said no just do 2 and 2 I told her this is why people are getting confused because one person says one thing and then the other says no ignore that....!!

The Hospital group really need to get their act sorted out and make sure that the information that they are giving out is consistent and is up to date  rant over !!

The first I knew about how out of date their book is was when I spoke to the dietician. At least you are seeing a different nurse now. If you can private message please will you send me the name of the robot one!! At least I will know what to look out for then on my appointment. X

Hi Galaxy, that is just awful. Where did you have your fill done? And how much did she put in? Do you feel any restriction yet? Poor you that is so confusing to get all that conflicting information and not to mention the shoddy treatment. I hope you did follow through with that complaint email.
Hope you are feeling better now :)

Hi Bella it was an awful experience and I have complained and they have said that they will put me in with a different nurse. I had my infill done in Leeds. No, I don't feel any restriction at all and tbh never have done I have managed to eat steak and all kinds of meats just chewed them really well more or less alway through.

I had 2.5 mls put into a 14mls band and the nurse that I saw said that it could take up to 10 mls before I feel any restriction. Needless to say I haven't lost anymore weight since having it done. But that could be more down to me and portion control. I need to ring the dietician again and ask as to how much cereal you should be eating I have just been having a few shreddies in a bowl with milk but am not sure whether I am having too much or too little??

Does anyone else know as to the limits? Was told it was quarter of a tea plate for carbohydrates and then milk a quarter but in realistic terms how can you measure these?? lol

Am toying with the idea of joining a gym too as don't want to have too much excess skin etc...plus know it will help with the weight loss too....but am not really a fitness fan, but I guess thats what has got me into this position in the first place.

Onwards and downwards ...

Hi Galaxy, I really feel for you and my concerns are similar to what you have experienced. I have an empty 14ml band feel no restriction but am managing on my own to eat by the book but last week put on a 1lb on the liquid diet. I voiced my concerns here that if I only get a few mls each time it will take me a good part of year to get any restriciton. I know everyone is different but did you not think before you had it done that the first weeks would be when you would loose the most? And then it would slow down? I know I did. Was I neive? Decieved? I am not sure. All I know is I am trying hard to think possitive but I am reading over and over banders loosing 20,21 pounds the first 3 weeks including pre op then sticking around that number and not being able to get past that number. Its weird isnt it? I mean even the three of us on this page, you me and Lola all around the 20lb mark and none of us the past few weeks have budged even with fills (I have yet to get mine). I am trying to be optomistic and before I went for the surgery all I read and saw was big weight losses in people with bands 10~14lbs a month and now I see bandings 2 3 4 weeks post op remaining the same or having a small gain. Many might say you have to wait to get the right restriction and I agree to a point but if like me you are already eating small portions 3 times a day, what realistically will a difference of restriciton make? Because I was told by many that my gain last week was to not eating enough (i had no more than 800 a day) now I have upped it to 1000 ~ 1200 on mushies so when I have restriciton what then? Less calories? Another gain? I did not expect getting banded to be so complicated. I though band in, restricts portions, excercise, follow the rules = guaranteed weight loss. Not every week but certainly in the first 4~6....Call me crazy :)

Hi Galaxy, thanks for all your daily update and I am sorry what a terrible expereince you have had with the after care? I hope it has got better with the complaint you made. How are things going now? would love to know :)

Jane x

After the initial call from Lisa at THG I haven't heard anything more about my complaint, she did say that I may or may not hear anything else but at least I had voiced my opinions.

For the first couple of days after the fill I was very sore, but that settled down and I noticed my weight had gone up by 2.5lb.

I think its more me not eating enough as I don't really feel hungry like I did before but this has been this way since the operation. My dad is in hospital at the moment so mealtimes are a bit erratic my mum doesn't drive so I am taking her for the hospital visits and then taking her back home and spending a bit of time with her. (My parents have never been apart since they met in their teens apart from operations and being in hospital so they are very lonely without each other).

I have started having a Special K cereal bar for breakfast and a piece of fruit. The 2.5lb that I put on has come back off, so that is a bonus but don't think that I will be into the 17 stones by the end of this month seen as though its only 4 days off but am not duly worried I feel like I have lost several inches as my bike trousers are looking baggy around the bum and waist (massive bonus), my tummy has definately gone down and in general I feel a lot lighter.

My mood has lifted greatly even just losing the 21lbs, I am trying to pluck up the courage to join a gym as the sports centre near us has an offer that you can for the first 3 months pay £12.00 and then after that you pay £20.00 per month this offer ends at the end of the month. So need to make a rash decision one way or another and get it done would like to try and swim again but still feel like a whale :( and would certainly like to be fitter on the whole.

Hi Bella

The 1lb that you put on last week could be due to the TOM or even that you had not been eating enough too but weight can fluctuate from morning to night, day to day and week to week my weight crept up by 2.5lb last week after my infill but have managed to lose it again this week. I don't stress about it as much as I used to pre-op because I am 1.5 stone lighter than I have been for a long time and even after following WW and SW never lost this amount ever!

Yes, when I heard that it might take 9,10 or even 11mls in my band to feel any restriction I was a little concerned and thought its going to take ages before I feel any at all and was concerned about my weight loss. I know that some people only get weighed once a month maybe if you tried this? try not to be too hard on yourself you have lost over a stone already....The people that have lost a stone in a month maybe just more active than we are (think theres a lesson to be learnt there!)

I know its only a tool to help with the weight loss and we have to change the habits of a lifetime which can take some adjusting to. I can and have eaten meat so nearly fainted when the dietician said that I can start having wafer thin ham, I thought to myself I have already eaten steak!! So each and everyone of us is different and our weight losses are personal to us.

On a positive note you are also 1.5 stone or more lighter than you were a few weeks ago, that is no mean feat, I bet even if the scales are showing a small gain then you will have lost inches elsewhere, I didnt do my measurements although I wish I had. Maybe you can do this and even though its not registering on the scales you will have lost still, I focus on what I have done and not what everyone else has lost whilst they are inspiring and good to read it helps us in the long run as we get all their good tips etc.

Don't get me wrong I want a loss on the scales like everyone else but I know I am losing the inches so that is a bonus, knowing that you can get into something that a couple of months ago that wouldnt have fit you etc.

As for the portions I dont think they will get smaller it maybe that we eat a higher calorific meal such as 4 melba toast and peanut butter for breakfast. Whilst this is a small portion it is high in calories and protein too.

With regards to losing the weight I thought that initially you lost a substantial amount of weight it the came to a plateau and you started to feel hungry and it was then that you needed an infill. I have only once experienced hunger and that was because I had a salad for dinner but didnt eat when I first got up and went on my pc, it was a couple of hours later that I felt hungry.

I look at it this way if I hadnt have had the band done I would have been pushing 20.5 stone I would have been more depressed and struggling to find more clothes to fit me.

As it is 7 weeks into having a band fitted I have lost 1.5 stone, lost several inches, have reduced my anxiety tablets and feel on the whole so much happier, I feel more contented and I also feel lighter. Life is improving and I am determined to lose this weight. Okay I am not going to get into the 17 stones by the end of this month but its no big deal tbh I will just move my mini target date forwards another couple of weeks.

Hi when I had my band fill I went to see the xray guy he laid me on a table the took photo found my port then said a sharp scratch was not to bad at all then moved the table to a stand up position
He then asked me to swollow a mouth full off this drink ( bit horrid but ok) then he took pictures then came back and added saline to my band then took another drink and came back filled again then said you have 5 mls in your band it was a 9 ml band
He then said go back to stage one for first few days then move on to sloopies
But really felt the restriction it was good for about six weeks then went back and put another 1.5 mls in but it was a very good experience at Sheffield northern general hospital
So forty to here how they did yours I think they do need to use an X-ray as you can see it go down and they get the best amount in
Take care
Mark

it was all a bit unnerving but if the information given in the first place was updated then I think that at least I wouldn't have had any expectations in the first place.

Think its defo better done under x ray, but someone else had told me its because they have reduced the surgery prices to less than £5k?? I don't know how true this is so I can't really speculate. Each surgeon is different and different hospitals have different rules even to how long you should have liquids and sloppies and what you can and can't eat post op.

Thanks for the regular updates, I am being banded at THG next Friday, 3 August. So helpful to hear your experiences. Good luck for a fab weight loss journey. Tracey xxx
