I have a couple of unanswered questions, which I have asked already, I am having trouble navigating myself round the sight so you may have already answered but I can not find..
No1 Does every patient have an endescope?
No2 If so what does it involve?
Thanks a million x

Hi Clare,

1. As far as I am aware all bariatric patients have an endoscopy to check the condition of our throat and stomach lining (to check for pre-existing ulcers and other conditions).

2. The endoscopy involves putting a 1 cm optic fibre camera on a tube down your throat into the stomach. It is not *NICE* or pleasant (makes you feel like retching and up-chucking the camera tube several times during the procedure).

Hospitals offer either analgesic throat spray (which I had because I went on my own) or -- if you have someone to accompany you -- they will offer local anaesthetic. I would advise, TRY to have someone with you and go for the local anaesthetic !! :p

Regards,
Sharon

Thank you I could jump up and down. I have no idea what happens after this appointment or time scales, Have you?

It depends what your first "appointment" is for -- is it an "education / information" session, or is it an actual first consultation with a surgeon ...?

These were my timescales so far:

1. Referred Jan 2011

2. Received appointment to attend an "education session" in June 2011 at the Whittington.

3. After that things speeded up -- first appointment with a consultant was mid September 2011

4. My GP applied for funding in August of this year and that was approved end of september

5. Gastroscopy 27 October 2011

6. First appointment with Thoracic Department 3 November 2011 (pre-assessment prior to sleep apnoea test)

7. Sleep apnoea test -- awaited but hopefully December

8. Pre-surgery review: 16 January 2012 **

** Surgery itself likely to be within 6 - 12 weeks after that (March / April 2012) depending on results of sleep apnoea test and general assessment at the pre-surgery review.

Obviously timescales could be different at L&D, but I have found from the time of the "first appointment with a consultant surgeon" everything has moved much faster since then.

Best of luck !!!

Welcome Clare - we have an informal Northants support group that meets monthly in a local pub - it isn't my 'baby', but I went as a newbie last month and they made me very welcome. Keep an eye on the threads (search Northants) and you will be welcomed at the next meet.
