Hello Lovely people ...

Having read all of the info in responce to this thread, i decided to re contact my gp about all this ... Firstly ... a little background info ... i have degenerative disc disease, and crumbling vertaebrae after a failed operation, and i am having a gastric bypass to lose weight and then have spinal Fusion-surgery safely , I have had this problem since i was 21 ,in 2000, so its been one hell of a journey to get to where i am now , because of the severe pain i feel every day , i take a whopping cocktail of drugs, and after 10 years of 'guinea pigging' i have a selection that allows me to have a reasonable life - hurrah!.... i contacted my gp to day as i emailed him two weeks ago asking for a pain management referral to my hospital , i heard nothing! so i called today and requested to speak to him about the referral..so ... i passed on the information that the lovely nurse lisa gave me when i went for my pre op assessment , she told me that i would need to change some drugs because of their actual size , and the inevitable evil anti inflam .... however my gp has told me now that i should rely on the morphine post op(oral liquid) and to carry on with a big dose of morphine each day (i already take it !?!) until i can eat solids ... i take all sorts of tabs , ie : anti spasmodics, Baclofen, amitriptyline , fluoxetine (our common friend) tramadol, co dydramol, and laxatives and Morphine (liquid/tabs)...... i need all these drugs to function , and i know that without them im a mess ...

Does anyone have any similar experiences? i dont know what to do ? also , my gp told me that it is my consultants problem , and he shouldnt discharge me when im in pain .... do i contact my consultant ? i feel very worried now ... ALSO ..... i asked him if he would consider prescribing me FORCEVAL .... he said "why?" i told him for the second time... then he said , there are plenty of multi vitamins out there on the market .. buy some. i explained that i have a pre payment certificate and i cant really afford them , then he said ...your consultant needs to be more specific !!

nice huh ?

and lastly ... clearly i need another gp ... does anyone know how i could find a gp with WLS experience in my area ? where do i start ? hmmmmm

so sorry to burden you , any advice greatfully recieved xxx

Hello,

I take a similar concoction of meds to you, except the morphine, laxatives and prozac. All of mine have been fine post op. Pre op I used di-hydra-codeine as my main pain control but post op found I couldn't tolerate codeine at all so moved on to tramadol. I have a friend who uses oramorph and SR morph post op with no problems too.

Your bypass team should tell you which if any need to be issued in a liquid form, just for the first few weeks post op while you heal. Tramadol comes in a SR patch so that's one alternative.

The most important thing is going through all your medication with your bypass consultant before your op and getting him to communicate with your gp in advance of your surgery what changes you may need for post op. Don't let them class you in as a 'normal' patient with the usual minimal pre-op appointments, you're a complex case with a heavy med load so it needs extra pre-op attention.

Lastly, a little warning. I have spinal problems, and being flat on the theatre table sent my back into spasm. Immediately post op I was in severe pain with this and it took a while to get it under control as I am sensitive to morphine so couldn't have it, and they hadn't prepared an alternative, except IV paracetemol!
