SOOO HAPPY to be a loser!
hi
hope you all dont mind me asking but......
just wondering how many went private without looking into nhs and why????
for myself i couldn't wait as i knew id put on soo much weight while waiting that for my health and sanity i couldnt afford to gain more. plus i didnt need another battle in my life. also didnt think my pct would fund as had several probs with gp saying things my daughter has needed in past were too expensive as i would have to pay.

i got refered to the dietitian and did not keep the appointment as i had already decided i did not want to go through the NHS process for WLS by that time

hi
i asked my gp for help in jan , got knocked back and dismissed by her , so my husband said we could remortgage and get extra money on the house for a bypass.
The mortgage was just approved on tuesday i should have the money by mid july and i could have then booked surgery with dr ammori in early august

in the last month i have been on this site sharing my experience and have took their advice to go back to gp before spending all the money and try again on nhs.( and told my husband who definatly wants to save the money)

last friday we went to the dr and she has refered me to the hospital and now i am waiting for an appointment (she had no idea on time scale for appointments)

what is killing me (impatience wise) is if i wait several months to see what the hospital says and i then get refused
i will have lost all them months of losing weight when i had the money in the bank

but the mum of 3 kids and sensible money person feels obligued to wait a part of me feels it would have been better to get knocked back at the drs again and get on with it but that is probably the pesimistic part of me expecting to be turned down and for it to be months

if i could get it on the nhs i would be delighted to save the money but its another stress on my mind,
all last month i was stressing about getting the mortgage and now i am stressing about how long it will take to get an answer

I didn't look at NHS at all.

I really don't think they would look at me. I was in a position where I had a BMI of 40 and gaining weight. However, I didn't have any weight retaliated health problems. I just wanted to do something before it got to that point.

So I thought I got myself like this, it was up to me to get myself out of it. If that meant maxing out credit cards then so be it. I did not want to ask the NHS for the money (but that is just me).

I agree with WLS 100%, I just think the NICE guidelines should ve tighter.

Hi

NHS was not an option for me my BMI was way under the 60 that my PCT goes by for people with no co morbidities.

The NICE guidlines are just that - guidelines. If PCTs do not have the money to implement them then they wont.

I meet the NICE guidelines and my gp was willing to refer me. However you had to do a 12 week weight management course first then start the referal. I could see it stretching out for over a year if not more. So I decided to go privately. I have hypothyroidism, chronic psoriasis (soles of feet only!!?), high blood pressure and a dodgy heartbeat!! So quite well really. It's not as bad as it sounds but I just didn't want to wait any longer having made the decision. So full steam ahead now.

for me it was impatience  and that once I make a firm decision, I've got to get on with it, so didn't even persue NHS option:rolleyes:

I did feel guilty about the cost (£7000, paid £1000 out of our savings and took a loan for £6000) but my OH had laser eye surgery 3 years ago (which I know was only half the cost of my wls) but it was the best thing he ever did and I wanted that chance with regards to me losing weight...still early days for me, but the other folks on this site are such an inspiration...it's got to work! :fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed:

Hi hun,
i had been thinking about it for a while but never really did anything about it ...except eat my way to another 2 stones on! Then hubby said we could use our savings if it was what i really wanted....after that there was no way i was going to wait! (impatient pants!)
Went to see GP who wrote me a lovely letter to Mr Leader at the Nuffield...paid my money and 4 weeks later i was banded. I already know it was the best thing i could have done.....and its not even been a week yet!
Cost 7,600...all in inc top ups for 2 years.
lots of money but less than buying loads of diet foods and joining clubs again and again and again....then ending up throwing it all in the bin after i have passed the chippy/indian/cake shop etc.......

I had just had enough after yet another failed diet, was finding it so hard to play with the kids etc, and was soooo depressed (on medication for it).

But my BMI was in no way high enough for me to be a candidate for help on the NHS- so I looked into going private.

When I decided to go for the op, I booked an appt with my GP, just to run it by him, and he said he thought it would be the best thing I could do, and that he only wished he would be able to refer me so that I wouldnt have to pay, bless him!

It was THE best £5k I think i will ever ever spend, my confidence isgrowing by the day, and the scales are dropping- amen to that!

thanks for all your replies.
