Hi,
Whilst researching the different surgeries, I began to wonder about continued use of the anti-stomach acid tablets that people take, ie the PPI's omeprazole and lanzoprazole. Bypassers need to take them to stop acid pouring into the part of the gut that is not originally designed for containing acid. If they dont take them they get ulcers. Sleevers need to take them to prevent GERD. My question is this, do all sleevers take PPI's all the time??
Long term use of PPI's carry an increased risk of bone fractures, and reduce the absorption of B12. Stomach acid is needed to extract B12 from our food, and to break down protein. THIS is also why B12 shots are needed, not just because of malabsorption (bypassers), and why we need lots of protein. The acid isnt there to break it down effectively.
So, do all sleevers take PPI's ALL the time? And does anyone have any side effects? eg
