Im Finally Getting There!
I know its probably stupidly obvious cos your stuck in bed for abit etc but just to be definite I've seen a lot of comments about cathetas (if that's how you spell it) I just wondered if its something everyone has for this surgery? Xx thank you Xx Toni Xx

I never had a catheter after my surgery. I didn't have one when I woke up in the recovery room either immediately after surgery. They did say I wasn't to drink for so many hours before the op though so maybe that's why? I was up and walking to the loo roughly 2-3hrs after my surgery.

H xx

My surgeon says I won't have one , or a drain that some people have too .

I didn't have one, i was not in bed for a long time either, back on the ward at 1pm, walking around at 3pm.

Thanks for that all of you :D I guess it depends on the surgeon then? Xx

Ive had one before, and they dont hurt if thats whats worrying you?

i didnt have one either x

Just to be different, I did have one & it was a godsend. They put it in whilst you are still unconscious & you do not feel them take it out either. It meant I did not have to get out of bed in the 12hrs after the op & was able to start drinking straight away to stave off dehydration. Either way, you will be fine & well looked after xxx :):)

so glad not everyone has a catheta! had one after having my daughter and didnt like it at all! does anyone know if whittington does this a normal procedure? hopefully not! thanks xx

Probably showing my age here arnt I Haha but I'm petrified of the whole thing lol but then I think of a few months after the op any just thinkin when I get to that point and start feeling the benefits it will all be worth it! It's just getting to that point argh! Xxx

It's good that they don't hurt and I can imagine it would be a blessing in disguise! Did they ask if you wanted it or just do it, x x

I can't see what the problem is whether you have one or not ???

No, it is standard for my surgeon. I too did not like the idea but from experience, I would not have had it any other way. There was absolutely no pain ... not even discomfort. :)

I just wanted to know really cos I'd never heard anything about having one for the op and I just want to know everything I can to do with it I don't mind having 1 or not I just didn't know xxx

You were so lucky!! They had me up and out of the bed 2-3hrs after the op and then on the hour every hour after that. I was on a saline drip that I had to wheel around with me, plus they kept making me drink water. Not having the catheter MADE me get up and about regularly just to use the loo!

The sooner you are up & about the smaller your risk of dvt's , chest infections etc , so it makes sence to be up ASAP
