Hi all how do you have a shower after open op and keep wound dry,
didnt have shower while in ward but told i could and given dressings to use after shower at home........but thay didnt tell me how to keep wound dry and thinking i got to as to avoid infections.
Hiya jeff did they not give you any waterproof dressings? If so I think they like you to have showers instead of baths so you dont soften the new tissue in the healing process. Gail
Jeff if they put on that tegaderm dressing it doesnt leak at all it should be sealed all the way round It also doesnt need replacing after a shower its fine for a few days
I went to the district nurse to get my dressing changed and wound checked, they put fresh on but it started to itch like crazy. Rang Spire and they told me to take it off and as long as it wasnt oozing (ergh) then I could shower. I chickened out a little and showered before I took it off, but Ive obviously had a shower since and all is fine
At WM they take your dressing off and ask you to shower the next day. They showed me how to dry it using patting movements. The main thing is to ensure it is dry before you put the fresh dressing. We were told that we needn't use dressings if the wound had scabbed over, and as you say was not oozing. I'm told - but don't quote me - that so long as the wound is healing and not infected, it is better not to keep a dressing over the wound quite early on. x x
Make sure the wounds aren't pussing or bleeding. Use a gentle but antibiotic gel if you can get one (most chemists will stock them - most are too perfumed and contain alcohol)s. Use a clean soft towel and gently pat down the scar area being careful not to rub. Don't have the water too hot. Try leaving any dressings off the wound for a while afterwards to let the air get to it.
I spent years bathing amputee's that had open wounds and bathing htem is good for the wound and good for you too! Peps you up!
When I had my open op at WM I was showered the next day and the nurse put some sort of soap on the wound and washed it, so I never kept it dry, it was washed patted dry and then the dressing was put back on and then 3 days after op when at home took the dressing off and kept it off and I've had no problem at all xxxx
I was told the dressings were completly waterproof and like Elffie had a shower without the need to change them was also told to leave them on for a week before taking them off. Advice after that was not to get them soaking wet but ok to wash gently( i had keyhole mind you) x

mate, i've been showering with no dressings on since i was in hospital, they took my dressings off on thursday morning, and as soon as that drain was out and the catheter was out, i was straight in the shower....have no problems with it getting wet, if you're worried about infection, wash with the hibiscrub solution, this'll kill the bugs
