The gallstone pain - off to the docs

I'm off to the docs now to chase up my scan for the gallstones. I had a severe attack last night - it was excrutiating and hubby was about to call an ambulance. Lasted about 2.5 hours in total so the worst one yet.

So will update when I'm back. Wouldn't it be lovely if I got sent straight for the scan? LOL well we can live in hope :D

Hope you get everything sorted today Karen... xxx

Good luck Karen-
the pain in those attacks is just unbearable-
made me pass out once, far worse than giving birth

Karen hope all goes well at the doctors today and hope you dont have to wait long for your scan. Good Luck.

Good luck Karen, you have my deepest sympathies, there is no pain in the world like gallstone pain (and i've given birth to a 11lb + baby on gas and air so i know).... I hope you don't wait the 12 months i had too :) xx

Good luck Karen! I have had gallstones for 20 years. The pain is absolutely horrendous. In fact I also had a mild attack last night, even though (or probably because) I am now on the super strict fat free pre-op diet. It didn't like the radical change. I can't wait to get rid of my gallbladder.

Hope you get your scan immediately!

I had my gall bladder taken out just over two years ago and I agree, the pain of them in the worst.

Don't let them get away with prolonging it. My gall bladder attacks started off about two hours in length. My last one lasted nearly two weeks, sometime worse than other times and it wasn't going away. What set it off was a low fat meal, and then the night before they operated, what made it worse was a glass of blackcurrant squash! I was already in hospital by then, and was in such pain that I was near enough screaming and must have woken half the ward. When they operated, they found my gall bladder was severely infected. So glad that it is gone, especially now that I have just had my gastric bypass done, on day 11 now.

Jacquera, that is interesting, in that I had blackcurrent squash at home and have had some all of the last two weeks on this bloody diet. Maybe that aggravated it? I haven't had an attack in 15 months prior to yesterday. And the last one was due to a very high fat meal, whereas I had literally NO fat in the last few days prior to yesterday. It's hard to get it right. Can't wait to get rid of the darn thing ;)

Well the doc said he would chase up the scan request, phoned whilst I was there, and they haven't received a request  So they have now.

He did a thorough examination and asked lots of questions and he seems to think it might be more than my gallstones in that it can take just a cup of tea to set it off. But reading your replies that seems quite common. Anyway, he is also going to write to Mr Ammori to ask him to review me very soon.

As for my periods (I also went to the docs because I've had a continuous period since the week before the op - so 13 weeks) he has referred me to gynae assessment and in the meantime I have to have the myrena checked - possibly removed. So at some point I will have to think about some other source of protection.

So that was my doctors appointment. Glad I went now considering it brought up the fact that the hospital hadn't been contacted yet re my scan

I don't think blackcurrant squash would normally set off a gall bladder attack, it is fatty food that does that, but I was at such a stage, that anything set it off.

This is interesting as I drank NAS blackcurrent squash whilst I was waiting for my gallbladder op as I was on the understanding that it was the fat contents I had too watch ( which I did, like a hawk) U would be surprised how much hidden fat and sugars are in certain things, so I found it helpful only to use fresh produce and didnt eat anything ready made, ( Not that I am saying u r kay) and I checked the labels for everything, changed my milk too skimmed milk ( red one), cut out sugar I used sweeteners instead and still do to this day in fact, well ever since my op in sept 2009, just wanted to pass on the info I received at that time.....All the best - Julie xx

I meant to ask this earlier but I got waylayed by a dumping episode off (of all things) a skinny latte - I'd had loads of skinny lattes, it's weird

Anyway, sorry I meant to ask how come you've suffered with gallstones for 20 years without having the op to remove your gallbladder? You must have suffered terrible.

I think the one year Julie had to wait is bad enough. My sis in-law has now been waiting 3 months but is hoping for the op in January. But 20 years? OMG

I was diagnosed with gallstones as a teenager. And at the time the episodes were quite frequent, but thankfully the last 10-15 years or so they have been few and far between. Maybe once a year I get an attack and they are less violent than in the beginning when I just about died of the pain! I once had to call an emergency doc who gave me an intravenous shot of some holy painkiller (no idea what it was) the pain was so bad!
Generally speaking only very fatty foods set me off, or things that are hard to digest but not necessarily fatty, such as hard boiled eggs, hot dogs, processed meats. Yesterday I had ham and some of those crabsticks for lunch. Nothing else - and it still annoyed my gallbladder! I was quite surprised.

At the time, when I was diagnosed, the Dr said 'see how you go, if they give you lots of grief, we can take your gallbladder out'. But seeing as they didn't (once a year I can cope), I never had it removed. But now it's not an option anymore. I've had an ultrasound a few weeks ago, which confirmed they are well and kicking and will come out the day after tomorrow when I have my bypass! woop!

I am so glad you are finally getting somewhere Karen. I suffered 17 years ago while pregnant with my eldest and can still recall the pain. It was the one time in my life I was skinny as "everything" set off the pain! I recall living off 2 Ritz crackers and a strawberry or something stupid, as anything more set me off.

Once I had my gb removed it changed my life! No exaggeration!

Hope your appt comes thru V soon xx

Good luck sweetie. I'm going through the same thing at the moment. Had them confirmed in a scan on Saturday. Hope you get yours x

At least that will be just one op and not two hun. Although I do believe the recovery takes a little longer so take it easy.

Good luck for your op.
