The Norovirus

Stavros

Luton & Dunstable Post-op
Hi All

I have just lost 22lb in just 18 days which under normal circumstances I would be very pleased. But! I have never felt so unwell ever!! as during the past few weeks. I managed to contract the Norovirus. My GP told me that having had a stomach by-pass this made the effects of the virus far worse than would be normally experienced. I now find lots of the foods that I could eat now cause me to Dump. Such things as bacon, tin fruit in natural juice, all breads, and a lot of dairy products. I am having a hard time eating now. I have never felt so week and run down and very tired. Has anyone else had experience of this sort of illness, and will I get more tolerant the better I feel?

ahh no hope you get better soon, I've not heard of norovirus. Maybe try sticking with soups or foods you no your fine with till your feeling better then maybe slowly start re introducing the other foods and see how you go x

oh dear i know what it is they had to close a whole ward down in my local hospital to all visitors because of this viruse.
i am glad you are feeling a bit better, hopefully you may start to eat the foods you used to in time, maybe getting your protine in and small slow steps again may help, i know you have proberbly tried this, i just whish you well hunny. xxx

you took the words right out of my mouth,

oh dear, they did shut lots of wards down at L&D the other week because of that... i so hope your better soon xx big hugs xx

I haven't any experience of it post op...but I was on a cruise 5 years ago and got struck with the virus then...wiped me out for weeks, so with the bypass it will take even longer I should think as you're not taking on extra resources to recover...

I would think keep to as high protein foods as you can possibly manage without dumping to aid with recovery..

Best wishes and I really hope you feel better soon x x

That's awful, Stavros  hope you feel better soon :wave_cry: I have never had it & now hope I never do :sigh: xxx

Hi Stavros,

Back in October I contracted a really nasty stomach bug, I couldn't stay away from the loo for a week.

From personal experience I found things like vegetable boullion, bovril, sugar free jelly and ice poles.

It's a matter of anything to get the fluids in. The boullion and bovril will also replace salts.

When you start to feel better, take things back to the start after your op. fluids then purée then soft etc. but you can do each stage for only a couple of days or as you find comfortable. It will probably take between 1-2 weeks to get back to 'normal' after your symptoms disappear.

If you can tolerate them, try sipping fortimel regular chilled over ice. Just don't drink a lot at once as they will cause you to dump, but they have a good quantity of nutrients in them.

Hope I havent bamboozled you with too much info.

Feel better soon

Julie xx

Thank you all for your good advice and best wishes. I have gone back to eating very basic stuff, as if I was just after the op and this seems to be working. Cup a soups are fine; eating grapes, dried fruit also has no ill effects. Still steering clear of dairy products though. Have managed to keep my weight the same this week which I think is a good thing considering the circumstances

oh dear you poor thing! I contracted Norovirus last April when I started my first ever ward placement (I'm a student nurse) and it was just the worst thing ever. Not only do you get the sickness & diahorrea but you also get flu like aches and pains.
Luckily for me I wasn't bypassed at that time but I'd hate to have to cope with it now as some days can be very delicate with food intake anyway post op.

hope you start to feel well very soon...keep up the fluids! xx
