Have just had a phone call from a very nice lady at wm. My 2nd pre op has been bought foward to 17th March now And my op should be completed before the end of april they are currently looking at 4 -6 wks after 2nd pre op for your op date.

And you only need to bring one patient summary not 2.

That's great news Terri and thanks for the heads up. :D

Am really sorry chick don't know what to say other than don't give up the fight, do what they ask and take it from there.

Same from me, Sarah, am sorry you got a knockback, but it apears to be only temporary. I'd take Terri's advice.

I do wonder though that as you got the appointment very quickly that an admin error was made or that the criteria wasn't checked over properly. Maybe go back to your GP and speak with them to see if he/she can explain?

Try and stay positive. :hug99:

Brilliant news Terri. Lets hope Red gets a call as well.

Oh Sarah, Im sorry ((hugs))

It could be that your GP hasnt referred you correctly, or that your PCT insist on you having documented evidence that you have tried to lose the weight yourself.

Try to look at the positive side (easier said than done, I know) At least they want to help you to try to lose weight, and it might be that you can manage to do it if closely supervised and therefore not need to put yourself through the trauma of surgery. Having said all that, if you are absolutely certain that surgery is the only way for you, then I would make an appointment to see GP to see where you go from here.

Im sorry, I cannot recall whether you had health problems that were attributed to your weight or co-morbidities. I do recall that your BMI is below 40 and this might be the reason for their decision.

Thanks sam yeh i will go back to my gp my bmi is 38.8 and i have a slipped disc and av really bad back problems ive got asthma depression(due to my weight!)av got fat in my blood, and on the boaderline of diabetes xx

maybe your GP hasnt stressed your other health problems in the referral letter.

Have you consulted your GP before about your weight? Or is this the first time you have mentioned your weight to him. Have you ever been prescribed Xenical or Reductil?

Perhaps make a list of all the diets you have tried, and the results you have had. As well as a list of all the ailments you suffer from whether or not as a result of your weight. However minor you might consider them to be. Perhaps you can help your GP put a stronger referral together explaining why intensive weight management isnt the solution for you.

Good luck hun. Dont give up the fight. Good things come to those who wait.

Brunetteandred – I am so pleased for you hunni, that is fantastic news. It would be awesome if you had company when you are in there too :)

Sarah – I am so very sorry to hear your news, but you can always appeal?

My story so far:
I went to the doctors last Monday, and the doctor agreed to refer me for a gastric band. My letter was posted to Walsall Manor on Friday (so they should receive it tomorrow).
I decided to pluck up the courage and tell my mom about it today, and she told me that she was referred to the same hospital and same Dr. Khan a couple of years ago.
She told me that he turned her down for surgery.
I am now feeling concerned as after hearing that with my mom and with Sarah, I feel like they will turn around and say no. And well to be honest, I don’t know how I will cope with that. This is my last resort and I have been dieting for as long as I can remember and I am just at a point where I am maintaining my weight and not losing.
My mom has high blood pressure, heart problems, and retains water and is a diabetic. So maybe that is why she got turned down for surgery but I am not sure.
I am 23 years old, 5ft 10” which I think works my BMI out as: 48.9?? I suffer from depression but that is due to my weight. I don’t have any other medical problems (At the moment) but this is why I am wanting to have this gastric band. I am sick of being fat, I hate myself and the way I have let myself get.
I am due to be married 20th August 2011, and I don’t want to be a fat bride I want to feel comfortable with myself and my body and I know that I won’t if I don’t lose this weight.

Sorry I am just rambling...

Thanks for listening though

with a BMI of 48.9 and provided you can show you have tried other avenues and still failed you should be elegable under your PCT for funding, the fact you are fit and healthy will aid your application to some degree.

Hi Rachel,

The advice Sam gave to Sarah above is sound and I would probably take heed of that in your case to prevent any chance of potential misunderstandings and/or disappointment.

When I initially approached my GP and blurted out I wanted bariatric surgery, I told him all the efforts I had made to lose weight; many of these were documented on my medical record and in addition my depression and blood pressure.

It was this information he used to:

a) ensure my referral would meet NICE & our PCT guidelines
b) evidenced mine (and his) argument for the surgery

Don't give up. Retread your steps and see if there is anything that was left out or could be done better.

And keep us posted.

Best of luck. :hug99:

The doctor (as far as i am aware) but all the things that i have tried and the fact that i am suffering from depression due to my weight.
