Whats this about injections?

I'm gonna be having heperin for 6 weeks. Can't wait!!!(

My oldest daughter is doing mine, can hardly feel them...but some nice bruises coming up!

I am having issues now that I feel are down to Clexane. I have been bleeding for 25 days in a row and have had large blood clots. It is a long story I have posted a thread about it if you would like more details.
All I have to say is DO YOUR RESEARCH! before taking them. No one told me excess bleeding could be a side effect and how I have been to my GP had blood tests and am going for a scan, but after reading and searching I have come to the conculsion it is down to Clexane.
I am not saying DONT TAKE THEM! That is your call I am just saying please be aware of the side effects and made an informed choice about whether you decide to take them or not. I was not given that option, only heard about them when checking out, nurse comes in, take these injections over the next 7 days and to do the first one infront of her so she could see I was able to do it myself. Did the other 6 myself at home. But no one said there could be side effects nor did I think to ask, but why would you if you have no experience nor warning?
Just though I would let you know so you can make in INFORMED choice for yourself.
Thanks,
Bella.

It's not too much of a problem. Hardest part for me was remembering to do it! I did it after a c-section too so wasn't worried about it at all.

Hi Bella, sounds crap that you have been bleeding for that long...however low molecular heparin - which is the drug family clexane belongs to does not increase uterine bleeding - that is down to the oestorgen stores in you fat cells which post op are going crazy. It makes you blood thinner so it can appear that you bleed more but it does not increase your uterine bleed as it has no effect of the build up of the lining. You can get that treated with some med's if you see your GP.

TAKE YOU CLEXANE GUYS!! I think you will find that there are some surgeons that would not operate if you refused to take it post op - Post op clots are what kill us fat people - and the clexane is to reduce this risk. There are more deaths per year from post op clots (VTE) than any other thing!

I had my band fitted on thursday, and don't have to do any at home injections at all . . .so it may well depend on what you're having and where ~ but give your provider a call to find out if you have concerns.

I'll be having my heparin jabs twice a day for 6 weeks. I'm a bit needle phobic so that'll be fun. Maybe get me a voodoo doll to practice on

It doesn't sound as if they are like an injection really, I'm sure you will be fine xx

Sorry to repeat myself and post this again after I have already done in my thread about my excess bleeding I feel caused by Clexane but here you are peeps, just be informed I say...

''Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Just because a side effect is stated here does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.
  • Bleeding.
  • Pain and irritation at the injection site.
  • Blood clots which form a solid swelling at the injection site (haematoma).
  • Decrease in the number of platelets in the blood (thrombocytopenia).
  • Major bleeding (haemorrhage), for example in the abdomen or inside the skull.
  • Alteration in results of liver function tests.
  • High blood potassium level (hyperkalaemia).
  • Death of skin cells (necrosis) at the site of injection.
  • Blood clots in the spinal cord (intraspinal haematoma) in people also having spinal or epidural anaesthesia.
  • Osteoporosis (a reduction in bone density leading to bones which may fracture easily) has occurred after long-term treatment with a similar medicine called heparin. It is possible that this could happen with Clexane.
The side effects listed above may not include all of the side effects reported by the drug's manufacturer.''

'' It makes you blood thinner so it can appear that you bleed more''
No sorry again it is not thinner blood it is thicker like a cut from an arm with a knife and thick rich blood seeping out. Giant clots like slices of afterbrith (sorry to be graphic but this is the reality). There is nothing to ''appear'' about it and it is not just a thinner longer menstruation. Women need to know it is NOT vital after surgery as many women do not get prescribed it eg Top Kat above, it all depends on where and who is your surgeon and if it is not vital for Top Kat why me? What is the difference? It is not a joke bleeding heavily for 6 weeks and other women do need to be told about side effects that CAN and DO happen when taking these kinds of drugs.

And here also is the copy and paste quote from a woman, a pregnant woman who had a similar experience to me...

''Bad experience with clexane!!!!

Hi all

I have Factor V Lieden, with protein S deficiency. I have 2 children, a boy aged 4, and a girl aged 3. When i was pregnant with my son, i was put on 75mg of Aspirin a day. With my daughter, they decided to put me on clexane 20mgs every day. I would like to take this moment to share my nightmare experience with clexane.

I was placed on clexane at 12 weeks, and was injecting in the leg, and it stung like crazy, i also developed these hard lumps under the injection site, which became itchy and bruised. At 16 weeks, i had this extraordinary stabbing pain in my left side, felt a bit like cramp, and trapped wind. about 2 hours later i started to bleed, and not just spotting, it was pouring out from me, like a heavy period. I was rushed to hospital, where they said i was having a suspected miscarriage. But on the scans the baby was fine, no signs of bleeding inside the womb, and the umbilical cord blood flow was normal. They kept me in over night to observe my bleeding, checked baby's heart beat, and everything was fine, but they did not know where i was bleeding from. The hospital sent me home, and this bleeding continued for a month, like a normal period, but lasted for a month. My mum suggested that it might be the clexane causing the bleeding, so she said stop taking it, so i did, and surprise surprise the bleeding stopped, i tried to tell my specialist this, but he got annoyed with me, and demanded that i continue taking it, and clexane doesn't course these side effects. So i started to take it again, and the bleeding started up, but it seemed as though the hospital was not interested, because they couldn't figure out where the bleeding was coming from. Eventually the bleeding stopped, and i continued to have a normal pregnancy. When it came to the point of me loosing my plug, before my waters broke at 38 weeks, it wasn't your normal plug, it was a huge blood clot, looked like a small liver. I went to hospital, and they looked at it, but couldn't give me answer. They wouldn't keep me in, and i went home. The following day, my waters broke, and gave birth to my daughter who is now 3. Another thing was that when she was born, they told me she had downs syndrome, this was not picked up in the scans, and i had the tests as well. I was shocked, because i was only 23. Then came the breast feeding, i didn't have enough milk, my breasts weren't swelling, and they didn't feel gorged with milk. I had to switch to formula. I believe this was down to the clexane, as i mentioned before, i was only on aspirin on my first pregnancy, and that was a normal healthy one, my son was born at 8lbs 14Oz. My daughter on the other hand was only 6lbs 5Oz. I am now 6 weeks pregnant again, and i am on 75mg of aspirin, I refuse to go back on the clexane, I just don't trust it. Has anyone else had a similar experience with clexane, whether it be bleeding, small birth weight, defects, or breast milk?

Sorry to rant on, but the professionals won't listen

Thanks for reading. xx''

I am not saying Clexane is the devil I am just saying there are side effects, be informed and make an informed choice. I was not given that option and I will be damned if I stay quiet about it. If I can stop another woman experiencing the pain and fear I have then that is all that matters.
Take Clexane by all means but make sure it is your own INFORMED CHOICE to do so.
Thank you ladies and gents....

Bella I do empathise with you...however "Uterine bleeding" is not the same as "bleeding" the blood will be thinner at the uterine wall and then it clots as it comes out of the Os into the vagina that is when it then thickens up to a "lump of liver" type clot.

Not may women die from uterine bleeding - however lots do from post op procedures. Everyone is risk assessed and most of the bands are so quick now they do not need clexane, as they are in out and up before you know it. They also generally tend not be as heavy as the the people having the more timely procedures.

It's fab that we can all share our experiences that may benefit others...however being someone that has seen the grief and heartache caused by sudden post op death - I would never advocate anyone not having there clexane if they were deemed a high risk patient.
xx

Sorry Dani but Uterine bleeding is defined as ''Abnormal bleeding from the uterus not related to menstruation.'' and ''any loss of blood from the uterus.'' I am bleeding from my uterus hence I am bleeding. Blood is blood it is the same thing! It is not just clots I am experiencing but thick, red blood NOT in any relation similar to a ''light period'' or a watery period or thinner in any manner. It is not a question of if I am going to ''die'' or not the problem is until I figured it out for myself no health profession before giving me this drug explained possible side effects that could arrise. If they had perhaps I would not have been scared out my mind for weeks on end wondering all sorts of horrific scenarios in my head!
It is not right and it is not correct that two women the same weight, the same day at the same hospital can have the same surgery, only difference is the surgeon and one is prescribed Clexane and the other is not. It is not consistant and it is not down to who is ''high risk'' I have no other health concerns never had DVT never had high blood pressure and other women weighing significantly more than I do with other health risks were not given Clexane. It is not about that it is about informing women and men about the side effects this drug can have and what potentially you CAN experience. I am sorry you do not seem to get my point, and that is OK but you cannot tell me the type of blood loss I am experiencing is not down to Clexane nor that it is a requirement for all patients. I thank you sincerely for your comments but I cannot agree with you. Perhaps if you had not been so lucky experienced 6 weeks of prolonged, draining, frightening bleeding you could understand a little bit of where I am coming from that I would hate another woman to experience what I have gone through when the least I can do is explain what has happened to me and others by using this drug.
