Thank to those who chatted to me about my sister's op which will be some time soon.
I came on here to put my mind at ease because we are very concerned that a bypass op may not be the right thing for her. I'm not sure if she doesn't listen properly to what they tell her at the hospital or whether she's blocking it out but she seems to know very little about it really when any of us ask. Several of her friends and colleagues have contacted me to say that they have concerns too but don't want to say anything to her, in case they upset her.
It IS major surgery and will be a total shock to her and will be FOREVER. She is going through the menopause and I don't think this helps either. We all know that low self esteem, depression, weight gain and weepiness, feeling hot & bothered etc is all part of the menopause but she thinks it's all down to her being overweight.
Another reason I worry is that another close family member has had major surgery for bowel cancer and has a stoma. Life is ruled by what she can/can't eat and in what quantities and she gets a lot of pain if she eats the wrong things. Gastric surgery hits some people worse than others. My sister HATES having to think about what to eat/cook/shop for at the best of times and even more so when she's trying to eat healthily so I cannot imagine how she is going to eat a healthy, balanced diet when she has her op.
I understand you people on here think the gastric bypass op is wonderful (and I don't want to upset anyone) but I have been looking at the statistics for it and they bother me. They bother me because I have this feeling of despair for her and because she has not been told she MUST have this op but she wants it because she is fed up dieting. She is making it sit right with herself by saying if she doesn't she'll die anyway but she has no health probs.
Oh dear ......... :wave_cry::wave_cry:
