Your valued opinions please

Sausages and mash with onion gravy. Shepherds pie. Cottage pie. You could make a basic meat sauce and then offer it with various different pastas. And just for me......bread puddin'

This is a totally unsuitable topic for this forum (lol). I'm salivating now-even though I haven't felt 'hunger' since my op !

stop it now, you bad people. I can't take any more.

Bread AND butter pudding please.....

I did wonder if it was appropriate.........but as usual I got the opinions and thats what I needed LOL!! ;)

It is a great idea but there are a number of things to consider

You would end up working very long hours in addition to those already worked. Unless you had lots of the food pre prepared ready to just reheat you'd be cooking all day. If you do make huge batches and keep them chilled or frozen then the quality suffers.

How much would you need to charge to cover your costs and give you a suitable return? Most of the meals on your menu can be bought at local supermarkets for a fiver or less per person and microwaved in a few minutes. Now I don't doubt that the quality would not be as good as yours, but if you need to charge ten quid to give you a decent return then people will be less inclined to pay for your stuff

If you're looking at deliveries of hot and cold food you would need a specially developed vehicle, and a driver. I guess you have one van already but would that be enough? The local pizza delivery firms can use cars as there stuff goes in a flat bag, but your food as you know needs different packaging and handling. Not cheap to buy or run and your one van means you could only deliver to a narrow territory or the waiting times from order to table would be far too long. People want the food there for next to nothing in twenty minutes, could you cook and deliver within half an hour?

This sounds like I'm being negative :D but part of my job is to develop and launch new products and services so I have to look at the practicalities of great ideas, and more importantly the return on investment. This is a great idea but not one to be launched without a great deal of research. Is there a similar service offered locally, or even not that locally? if not why not? I would suggest for the reasons I've mentioned above maybe.

I reckon it would be a huge amount of work with potentially diminishing returns once the locals had got over the initial interest. However you should do lots of research into what's available and what your true costs would be. Then you should relocate to Sale so we could order from you :jelous:

Thank you Karlos,

A lot of what you've said we have looked into and the price point could be a concern, we do have a business which already uses the products we are hoping to offer and have vehicle and large kitchens etc already in place, we are really wanting to utilise them more to increase their earning potential as there are periods of time when they are not used to capacity

I will revisit the things you have commented on and have a proper rethink about the idea...maybe I am rushing in too quickly.

Many many moons ago, after a visit to New York, I had researched and taken almost to opening a business selling filled baguettes, sandwiches etc and for one reasons or another didn't go for it. A couple of years later these types of business started cropping up and now they are everywhere........Just don't want to miss the boat again.

As you said maybe the first question I really need to ask is why isn't there other businesses out there doing this?

Thank you for your comments, valuable as ever :)

On the pricing issue. Yes it would be more expensive, but then so are places like farmers markets. Pre op, I was going to our village one every fortnight and spending quite a bit stocking up on good meets, quiches pies for the following week. There was a lady there selling curry meals, but I never bought as I don't like curry. That is also another outlet you could think off specialist food venue's. I think sometimes they have something like this in Truro on Lemon Key.

Do you sell something takeaway products like this in your deli, that can be cooked or heated up later?
T

That would be good, it's always nice to have choices and as someone who uses the smoke alarm to tell me when food is done it would be a godsend lol

Some very good points for you to consider there raised by Karl. because this is traditional food people may believe that they can cook it themselves-but the point is that we do that less and less. I live close to a Tesco which sells excellent quality Indian food that is a fraction of the price of the dozens ( yes dozens!!) of Indian takeaways and restaurants within a 3 mile radius, but most of them seem to be busy as well. So does everyone want Balti instead of stew, and Biryiani instead of cottage pie? Or do they want tradtional food but it's not available. Why not do a small local pilot and see what happens before committing to a big advertising campaign? and will you do takeaway as well as home delivery?
By tweaking the names of the dishes you may well suggest that this is food they can't create themselves e.g Nanah's Luxury Lancashire Hotpot, Sarahs Secret Chicken Supreme. You already have your USP in the type of fayre on your menu.

I love this idea. I work full time, I don't like Indian, Chinese, Mexican or Japanese food, and now I'm post op, chippy McD's and KFC aren't an option.
There must be others out there, like me, who would love traditional food delivered as oppose to the lengthy preparation of making it yourself. And I'd be willing to pay more for good quality ingredients.

I'm with you miss air, burn offerings.

I have an aga, which was in the house when I bought it. I can put things in and forget them til the next time I use the oven and find a baking tray of charcoal. The rest of the village down wind can smell my sausages or snacks burning but I can't!

I would deffo buy a good product, especially as I don't cook for a family or anything. I might have to have a trip to Falmouth to check out Sarah's Deli anyway ;-)

Hi there I think your idea is great, when I used to work it would have been lovely to come home and order something like your offering. I have been unwell with chronic fatigue syndrome and at one point my mum used to have to come and cook for me due to being so unwell. If I could have had ordered food like this sometimes it would have taken pressure off mum and myself. I wish you luck in whatever you decide to do. Let us know how you get on. Luv Kaz x x x x x

I'm impressed with the ideas in this thread! I do hope if you go ahead that it works well. It certainly sounds like a good plan to me. x
