Ah well, bang goes that idea... (about liver shrinking)

I e-mailed the hospital coordinator last night to ask if I could do low-carb instead of low-fat, and she phoned me straight away this morning, so that's reassuring (I had read a post on the internet about the clinic which said once they got your money they're quite dismissive, so that really helped me feeling better to know that isn't the case at all!).

The bad news is that it's a no. Low-carb is for losing weight, the very low fat is purely to shrink the liver. I can eat as much as I like, it's not about calorie counting or losing weight, it's purely about reducing the stores of glycogen. Ah well. It's worth it, and it's only for a few weeks.

27 days!

This has me very confused as the glycogen stored in the liver is mainly from carbs. It's the whole principle of low carb diets, going into ketosis by burning the stored fat.
Hmmmm.....

I agree it is very confusing. I have shakes and meals ect that are meal replacement sachets which are very low calorie, low carb, low fat and high protien which are designed for ketosis. Yet i have been told I can not use them pre op. I dont know why they dont just pick on pre op diet and everyone follow that.

That even more confusing as those meal replacement shakes are what my hospital offers pre op. would great help if providers all sang from same hymn sheet x

They've said they will be great post op just not pre op. Confussing.com lol

Hi Bookie,
I was told to drink a pint of milk 3 times a day and eat nothing but salad and yogurts for 3 weeks. It worked as my liver did shrink and helped the docs move it out of the way for my sleeve. They were really pleased with the result and size of my liver when they operated.

Hope all goes well for you. It was the best decision I ever made and am now 16 months post op. and feel wonderful.

Bethany :D
