I think that it mainly depends on your hospital and if they do the routinely, the one I am with do. I also guess that if you are likely to have mobility problems in the first 24 hours then they might be more inclined to put one in. I think my hospital does it to keep a proper eye on your 'output' for the first 24hrs.

That is not a problem - they put it in when you are asleep - I love them cos i don't have to keep getting up to go to the loo lol its like heaven xx

I had this EXACT same worry...what will they think o fmy massive tummy? Then when i was told i may have a catheter in i was like OMG - they'll see my foo foo?? Then i was told in a pre-op email (among with other stuff the email didnt just say this one line lol!) to "shave pubic area about half way down" where the frig is half way down? Anyway i did my best (hair removal cream is ACE - my dad told me to do a smiley face, i was tempted...) and before i went into theatre they took the gown off me and put a blanket over me so i was totally naked and when i woke up i didnt realise i had a catheter until a nurse came over and put her hand down there to take it out! lol. I didnt particulary care though i was too out of it.

Then i was told to go and have a wash and they gave me a clean gown to wear (they had put me in one when i woke up) but the new one didnt fit, it went to just over my elbow on both arm and i didnt have my dressing gown with me so i just had to waddle back to my bed through the busy corridor with most of myself hangin out but believe me you DO NOT CARE. I just wanted my bed.
