Hi everyone, hope your weight loss journeys are going well!
I have around 10 stone to loose and surgery is my last result....I have literally tried EVERYTHING!
But I can't decide which one, it was originally the bypass as a consultant told me my BMI is too high for a band but then went to an open evening at a private hospital and everyone was against the bypass and was I felt like trying to get me to have the band instead ;( just can't make my mind up please help and I would appreciate some guidance Xxx

Hi shabby. I too have around 10 stone to lose and began by thinking I needed a gastric sleeve. My BMI was 43 and my consultations at Dolan Park resulted in me having a gastric band (which was fitted today!,). I am more than pleased with my decision for various reasons.
My advice would be to have a formal consultation so you can make an informed choice. Worth investing the time I found. Tracey xxx

Hi Tracey and Thank you for replying, I have my first appointment of the 22nd of this month so hoping to have an idea I what will be best for me by then Xx

There is nothing wrong with having a bypass or a band, both can help you lose that 10 stone if you work with them but peoples opinions on them aren't going to help you make the ultimate decision because they can be bias. Unfortunately you have to make the decision for your self but the best way to do it is to arm your self with as much information as possible. Your surgeon should play a part in deciding too as they have experience in knowing what operation you will be best suited for based of the results of their previous patients. There is also the options of the duodenal switch, the wrap and the sleeve, although your surgeon might not offer those but they are also very worth looking into. Often those are seen as not as drastic as bypass if that was something you were worried about. Personally though and like I say I'm biased, I'm extremely happy with my bypass and progress because of my high bmi the only other one I considered was the duodenal switch and in the end I didn't get that because it wasn't offered by my surgeon. He was the one I wanted so that tipped it in favour of the bypass. Best of luck deciding, whatever the decision, as long as you are committed to it you will lose weight :) x

Thanks Shelley I do really want the bypass as I understand my BMI is very High but I do worry so much that I will be miserable after and won't be able to ever change that as it is non reversible ;( this is the most hardest desision I have ever had to make and I am finding it impossible to choose but I know only me can do that boy HOW?? Lol X

Hi Shabbs, I would say the best thing you could do is read as much information as possible about each type of surgery, find out the side effects, risks, expected weight loss etc etc.
Also have a long chat with your consultant about what they recommend, ultimately they are the ones that know what works best as they see so many of us.
There's a lot of good advice and information to be found on these forums if you read through some of the post op diaries too.

I have had the bypass and I am very happy with it!! You said something that reminded me of my self about being unhappy if I couldn't change it!
I choose the bypass so I couldn't change it! If that makes sense! As knowing my self the way I do I would lose all my weight with the band have the band taken out and put every ounce back on and that would scare me more!
It is a big decision it's life changing! My final thought was I love food!! But if I keep going I am going to kill my self by food!
Don't get me wrong there are a few items of food and drink I miss but losing the weight feeling great feeling healthier far out ways the thought of missing that food.
I don't regret anything and happily live by my choice!! But that was right for me. It will all come clear research talk to a surgeon he/she may suggest what they think is best for you!
Good luck stay strong you will get there in the end
Love

Thanks Em X
I have done lots of research but it's different each time I think I am always seeing the problem risks with the bypass and then seeing so many people not losing weight with the banding which is what I am struggling with....do I risk my life to lose more or do I pay lots of money and fail yet again doing another diet ;-/
It's so hard but your right it will all hopefully come clear when I see the consultant, Thanks for the advice X

Hi Milissa, so glad to hear you are getting on well with the bypass, so if you don't mind me asking what is the major difference (apart from the weight loss Ofcourse) with your life before the bypass and now?
Just really can't wait to feel clearer in my head, it's all I think about just lately ;( Xxx

Thanks Em X

There are pro's and cons with whichever option you chose.

I had a band and don't regret it for a moment.

I'm sure when you have your appointment and can talk things through and make the decision thats right for you.

Bands are 'usualy' better for voume eaters, who dont snack, graze or have a sweet tooth - but as with whichever option you go for you have to be prepared to committ to change your eating / lifestyle to get the results.

Not to confuse you even more but have you thought about the sleeve?

Good luck xx

I'm a sleever. Hadn't even heard of this before researching my WLS. Wanted a band originally but had too much weight to loose according to my surgeon. I too was worried about it not being reversible. Was very upset initially but worked it through. Like everyone has said you need to research & read up about it. Meet with surgeons & experts for advice then make up your mind. It took me at least 6 months to make my decision. Have never regretted it. Love my sleeve & why would I need it reversed?? LOL
Happy to share my experience & answer any questions. Good luck.

Thank you Bellydancer that's really interesting think I may research the sleeve and other WLS as I have only been looking at band or bypass!
Its all scary stuff ;-( X

My thoughts on why I opted for band:
Non permanent
Still can have nice stuff (in moderation) as sugars don't have to be tracked etc
No pills every day to make it do as it should
just as effective, results are driven by us, not the op and so put effort in and you get the same result either way! So a bypasser with little focus can still struggle

Good luck, I lost 7st in 9mth with my band (bulk of it was off in 6mth in fairness), and I love it :)

Happy deciding :)

It sure is scary but lots of help & support on here so don't worry.

From everything I have read and barring complications the only factor in your success is you. Whatever surgery you choose as long as you are prepared to follow its rules, work with it and address the issues that led to this point you will be successful. I had the bypass and am thrilled with my choice, but I do feel that, as badly as I want to loose this weight, I would have done well with any surgery. Perhaps not as fast, but still eventually reached the same point.
