surgery alone?

I think I will be alone because I don't live near where I'm having my op and I can't have it at my local hospital my hubby probably can't come cos of out 3 (maybe 4 then) year old son, my sis may be working but she works in that hospital so hope she's working then she can find out if I come through it, there all going to try but I have to prepare myself for being alone I'm petrified! :S xxx

I am in Birmingham and my op will be here too. My mom is going to book annual leave for that day l, as I asked her like a baby lol. I am sure my partner will come up too if he can. But he will probably have to leave the kids with my sister to do that. I would hate doing it all alone. But if it was my only option, I wouldn't be put off lol

Why does your moms friend freak you out? Lol!!!

I was actually thinking the same thing the other day.

My husband is a nightmare whilst waiting for anything so he might not be such a good idea as I'm sure I'll be pretty stressed already and to add his moaning to that and it'll probably tip me over the edge!!
My mum would be good if she can get away from work etc but she tries too hard so her calming me down will annoy me!!
My sister would probably just sit there texting or on face book so not worth being there.

So I'm thinking my friend would be the best as she's a very straight talking person so if I was getting worried she'd put me in my place.

I think I would be able to go it alone I needed too but I deffo think lifts to and from are a must, oh another must would be laptop to keep in touch with everyone on here!

Good luck and I'm sure you'll work it all out

Vicky x

My hub took me in but left after a short while, so i was on my own, the nurses were great walked me to the operating room - i was actually better off alone so when the nerves kicked in i couldnt moan at anyone

Hi Vickylou,

I will probably be on my own when I have my op. Am planning to travel in to the hospital on day of surgery on public transport (1 x train, 1 x bus) exactly the same as I have done for all the pre-op appointments (obviously before I go in I will be fit and able to carry my small case/overnight bag etc).

I am *hoping* to be able to get a London friend to collect me and drive me home, altho that will mean persuading a friend (who all work full time like me) to take a day off work.

My family (79 year old Dad and 2 x married brothers) live 110 miles away in Dorset and I'm not expecting any of them to come up.

I am 43 and have been single forever (bar 2 short lived relationships) so am used to doing things on my own, travelling / holidays, going to the cinema on my own, etc etc.

You do mention a mum, sister and a hubby in a few of your posts -- it sounds as if you have quite a few family close to you, who you *could* possibly rope in to staying with you on the day of the op! (Hubby, surely?)

My husband dropped me off, stayed about ten minutes then went. I was on my own. I didn't even stay one night so there wasn't that much time to get lonely.

I will probably just get mum n dad to drop me off at spire for 12.3opm. Then I will probably have them come n visit the next day as we live a hours drive from the hospital :-( things will be fine x

There's a support group at Salford Royal Hospital each month. I think it's the first Wednesday in the month.

Hun im sure you will be ok at the hospital on you own... i just had a bad experience cos my friend passed away... but i would suggest you find someone to pick you up xx

I don't think I would be bothered about the hospital part. When I had been in previously it can sometimes be a pain with visitors because you worry about them rather than concentrate on your own healing. I am worried about the after care. I have 2 year old twins. A husband, but not much support if you know what I mean? I'm scared of the down time following surgery.

You will need some help when you get out - for a week or two - you wont be able to lift your twins for a while because of the risk of hernia - I sent people home who came to see me in the hospital, i was so tired and really just wanted to sleep

That's what I'm worried about. It's difficult trying to coordinate these things. Probably just as stressful as the op itself.
