hi all I finally spoken to sandwell pct u can pay the xtra money on top but 4 walsall it's am xtra 4,000 pounds she said Walsall overcharges that's why they will only pay for open surgery.but if u go heartlands they pay for keyhole there she said they have told mr khan to lower the price. I did have the option to change hospital but I think I will stick with mr khan he seems like he knows what his doing. But ivhope they do allow children in coz I got 4 under 6 and I can't go 4 days without seeing them it will kill me

Hi, Natalie,
Well done for finding out the info.
£4,000 is a lot to pay, but at least there's an option. When were you given the opportunity to change hospitals? Was it with your gp before he referred you or was it after you had an appointment at the Manor?

I have just got home from the meeting it was really good. Very informative and met a few of the lovley ladies on here there :D
xx

Well....it works...lol

And after speaking to them i found out that i would/do fit the criteria i just need to worry about the funding instead now.

It was just nice to see that it has worked for people and they are happy and healthy.

Im just back from the meeting as well. Met the lovely Rach, and Lorna (chivasgirl)

was v informative and great to see people who have had the op and doing very well. Two men got up and spoke to us, one has lost 16 stones and looks amazing you would never know he had been overweight. The other guy had lost about 10 stones and didnt look as though he needed to lose much more, maybe another couple of stones max.

Dr Hartland gave a talk explaining that Walsall have a preference for bypass over band as the success rate is much higher and the weight loss is usually greater. He did say though that they do do band operations, so dont be put off if anyone wants a band.

He went on to say that they are now doing 300 operations a year now they have a second surgeon on board, and that they have only ever had one operation with serious complications. ( I believe that this was a fatality as during my consultation I asked about mortality rates and he said one - but he didnt actually say during tonights meeting that the one case with serious complications was a fatality)

He also touched on the aftercare, saying that as standard you will get three appointments a year for two years, but that if you have any complications or concerns you can always ring the time for an urgent appointment.

Everyone was really very welcoming and there was opportunity to ask questions...

I think that's about it really, Have I Missed anything out Rach that you think the guys here would like to know?

I checked on the BOSPA website to see where i would come under for funding and it says that i need to fit the criteria for NICE guidelines...

NICE has recommended that surgery to aid weight loss should be available as a treatment option for people with morbid obesity provided that they meet all of the following criteria:
  • they are aged 18 years or over
  • they have been receiving treatment in a specialist obesity clinic at a hospital
  • they have tried all other appropriate non-surgical treatments to lose weight but have not been able to maintain weight loss
  • there are no specific medical or psychological reasons why they should not have this type of surgery
  • they are generally fit enough to have an anaesthetic and surgery
  • they should understand that they will need to be followed-up by a doctor and other healthcare professionals such as dieticians or psychologists over the long-term.
I fit all of the criteria apart from "they have been receiving treatment in a specialist obesity clinic at a hospital " i dont know if this is going to be a MAJOR problem or not...but i really hope not.

I think that was more or less it really hun, i am very glad that i went :)

And it was lovely meeting you :D

Thanks for the low down sam. Maybe I will try and go to the next one if I think of any questions will have to find out the details,

ooh, just remembered an important bit. Apparently the reason the success rate is so high at walsall is that when they cut your intestine and reattach the bit still being used to your new smaller stomach, they make sure that the last 80cm is not damaged - mr khan always leaves more than 80cm. This is because the last 80cm of the intestine is apparently the most "useful part" and where most of the absorption takes place. Hence Mr Khans patients are extremely unlikely to suffer from any malabsorption complications. I think Dr Hartland said we will absorb 60 - 70% of what we eat, where as in years gone by patients would absorb less than this as the final 80cm of intestine was not always left in tact.

I dont think ive explained that very well, but hopefully you get the gist of what im trying to say

How long ago did the guys have their ops?

The one who has lost 16 stones was just over a year. The one who had lost 10 stone was 8 months. Dr Hartland did say though that Men do tend to lose faster than women.

Oh yeah i remeber that bit...that was quite good news lol.

I dont know if this is just my mom "disaproving" but i just told her that i might opt for the bypass and she said no dont...it will take 10 years off your life. I am assuming that she is wrong as why would so many people have it??

I think i am being a fuss pot again lol.

20th May the next meeting hun
xx

The next meeting is 21st May, I presume at the same place, but I'll find out a bit nearer the time.

I haven't done that either, but I have done LighterLife which, of course, is documented on my medical record as one has to go every four weeks for BP checks.

Dunno if that counted.

Many thanks for the info Sam, you now have the job as WM Massiiiive's roving reporter... well, until the dream job comes along, that is ;)

I'd like to go to the next one. I've spent most of this evening asleep! Bah!
