Iv just read something on line - may not be true, and yes due to birthday celebrations i was up til 7 this morning so i am feeling tired and probably being over emotional lol but this is what i read

i would never go on a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet like Atkins, Dukan or Cambridge. Why? Because although you will probably lose weight, they may kill you. Don't take my word for it – read about the 43,396 Swedish women followed for an average of 15 years. Those who stuck to low carbs and high protein had a rising risk of dying from heart attacks and strokes, depending on how strict they were and for how long they endured them. There was a staggering 62% higher risk of such illnesses among the women eating the strictest diet over those who ate normally. Eating is for enjoyment; these diets turn food into medication, and it's patently the wrong medicine – it is often lethal.

So i know it says ie cambridge etc but after a bypass dont you concentrate on low carbs and more protein ??! :/ xx

I have been reading quite a lot about no/low carbs and very high protein diets and the potential pros and cons ... In my humble unprofessional opinion, its all about achieving a healthy balance rather than extremes ... But I am a bander, rather than a bypasser :)

thanks for your input, i am aware about finding a healthy balance etc but they do say to really concentrate on ya protein , just my mind doing overtime probably lol x

I think doing a vlcd for prolonged periods can be damaging. Because you do need to have a healthy balanced diet to stay healthy. Before my surgery I did lighter life, which is all about vlcd and your body staying in constant ketosis. I did it for about 6 weeks before I got my call for surgery, but in all honesty I was on the verge of giving it up anyway because I was so ill. To the point where I couldn't control my bowels (very very embarrassing incident in Bromley high st) I couldn't imagine staying on that for too long. I am almost 6 months post op now, and I do manage to eat a healthy diet, concentrating mainly on protein & veg, but I do include carbs occasionally.

Plenty of protein doesn't mean to say no carbs LOL relax and don't over think ... Apart from baring in mind the one fact ... that someones life expectancy is significantly affected by being overweight combined with the often associated co-morbidities ... Gotta weigh up all the options and decide which is preferable :)

My surgeon advised to have a balanced diet as he said you lose more weight and faster in the end. My mother in law only concentrates on pretty much protein only, a bit of veg after if not full and is trying to get me to do the same. She's had great benefits but I like just having normal balanced meals, just smaller.

I do the same as your mum in law :) protein first then if I can fit potato in not really strictly veg but low carb I do put spoon of veg on my plate but rarely get to eat it :) I was only thinking today I never eat salad any more it's getting away from the old on a diet have to have salad to slim idea, when I have a protein bar it usually has approx 31grms protein and 24carbs 11 of them sugars etc but have spoken to team about it and they advised nothing wrong with it , they say it is still low compared to what is usually recommended for normal daily intake xxx

The problem with Atkins (I don't know about Dukan) is that as well as being low carb and high protein it is also high fat, and they don't seem to worry about whether things are trans fats or more healthy fats. I try to eat more protein, but stick to chicken without skin and fish, only having red meat a couple of times a week. I do find it quite tough as I get very fed up and can feel nauseous at the thought of chicken but love parma and serrano hams :-( It is the trans fats that are harmful to your health

vlcd are not meant to be followed for a long period of time, in fact it is specified in the cambridge diet and Lighter Life before you start.
Also I think that being morbidly obese causes more problems than consuming low carbs and high protein foods.
It is everything in moderation, I think the reason that I have gotten to this weight now is because I have eaten for pleasure rather than for survival and being on a vlcd and getting weight loss surgery teaches me how to eat properly again.
Anything can cause damage if you have too much of it xx

You need to remember that the reason we need so much protein is because we don't absorb it well and we need it for the muscle and body changes. It's kinda fuel for our weightloss. I agree with flutterby - it is about balance - but our balance is skewed automatically due to the fact that carbs fill us too quick and we need the protein.

I did lighter life for 6 months then cambridge on and off for 6 months. Lost 6stone, hair fell out, nails were wrecked. Weight went back on, plus more. Never again. Tried 2 days on cambridge to loose some weight a few weeks ago and couldnt do it again. Then have done atkins, headaches in and out of ketosis are very uncomfortable. Lost some bulk, but going healthy balance tomorrow with fruit and weetabix! A bit sick of omlettes and meat now!!!
