Length of bypass

Mine was 100cm for each limb - if you have a copy of the letter your surgeon sent your GP then the details are on it.
I was told that the length is judged by the surgeon depending on how much weight you need to lose.
I was also told that they prefer not to do huge bypasses as they did years ago as with 70 - 100cm, the weight still comes of with less malabsorbsion problems.

It would be interesting to know how many people are aware of the amount of intestine they have had bypassed...???

I'm not aware how much i have been bypassed but will ask at my next appointment in November xx

I could have swore blind the nurse told me 2 mtres, think i have it totally wrong (wouldn't b the first time lol.) I'm definitely going to ask at my next appointment.

Great thread xxx

Kerry-Jo,
The nurse said 2 metres to me too but on reading the surgeons letter it is 1m for each limb - the 'absorbing' section is therefor only reduced by 1m. Maybe thats what your nurse meant?
We both had Mr Ammori too!

very interesting thread, im going to ask too at my next appt.
Excuse me if im being really thick but, what do they do with the section they cut off ? do they leave it inside you or bin it lol ??

I was done 100cm x 100cm. That means each limb.

I reckon they take it home for the dog :D x

Nothing is removed; it's replumbed.

course its removed, i asked for when i have my bypass, thats why bypassers malabsorb, any way...when i asked i was told the lower the bmi, the less limb is taken away.

It all stays in situ ladies, it is just 're-plumbed' as Brunetteandred says. The stomach & intestines has a huge nerve & blood supply going to it, so it's better to leave it where it is...the bypassed stomach & initial section of bypassed small intestine is attached lower down the intestine...I guess it just sits there & withers a bit...lol!

It's not removed it stays in place - the part that is disconnected has the bit that produces gastric acid thats why it gurgles when you eat and the reason why no digestion takes place in the new pouch itself. They also leave it in place incase it needs reversing if they have completely removed the bypassed bit then reversal would be impossible x

ok i have a lot to learn....... hey im just gonna be new on the bypass bench yanno x

Liz... yr such a knowledgable lady on pretty much everything, its just good to know yr human too. xxxxx

:) theres always something new to learn in life, no matter what, its good to learn new things, i have a lot to re learn once im bypassed as im so used to living with band rules after 6 years, so i will be asking lots of questions once its done ;)
