Me and my battle with the bulge (Gastric Band)

katie that totally sucks!

pre op diet is evil!!

UPPING YOUR WATER INTAKE WORKS!

Ive had to jump on the scales this morning after a full day yesterday of increasing my water and peeing like a race horse and 1lb has come off.
It was very hard work but i had a really milky weetabix for breakfast, 3 x cups of tea and 100ml of water.

It was also my 1st time eating in the works canteen last night. I took some chicken and sweet potato in a small tub, and it took 30 minutes to eat it. Im so glad im a manager and dont have restrictions on my breaks, or i dont know what i would do.
I managed to have conversations and chew every bite slowly.
YOU DO LEARN TO CHEW SLOWLY, it has come very easy to me, like i keep saying the thought of being sick makes me cringe.
However, the sweet potato didnt go down very well, i felt its every movement down my throat so just concentrated on the chicken.
Later in the evening i had a custard pot which went down really good and only last week that seemed to be hard to get down.
I also tried my 1st banana and that was hard too so i gave up after a few bites and ill revisit in a few more days.

Last night in work i had a good chat with the 'fitness freak'. He is a lovely lad but his body is a temple and only yesterday before a 10 hour night shift He went for a 10 mile walk, and he cycles 18 miles to and from work. I told him about my band and how i need to start exercising. He was brilliant and told me about a website called 'strong life' which you can track all your calories and exercise. It recommends it as he also concentrates more on protein and this website calculates it all for you. Im going to have a look on it in a bit. Considering he is a fitness freak he was really nice and supportive about what im trying to achieve and said if i ever needed help, to ask him.
Thats really nice as most fitness freaks look on us fatties like we have the plague sometimes.

Im off to see my son now (he is with his grandmother) and enjoy some of this sunshine before i go into work.

Also, i highly recommened the 'so juicy' chicken packets you may have seen advertised on the TV. its really easy to do and the chicken is not only extreamly tasty its juicy too which helps with it going down. The garlic flavour and paprika flavours are absolutely devine!

NEARLY 1 MONTH POST OP! 22LBS GONE!

Its 4.30am tuesday morning and ive just finished my night shift and thought i better do an update for my diary.

Lost 0.75lb last week. Of course im gutted considering the lack of calories but it was my 1st week back on night shift and maybe that has knocked me around a bit.

Just some things ive noticed
1) my scars have healed and they are just red lines at the moment, all scabs have come off.
2) i can feel my port under the skin of my largest scar.
3) my skin is really dry. Im not sure if its down to this hot weather but im using moisturiser every day now.
4) i can sit, stand and lie down with no issues at all. Even bending down is fine.
5) When i drink, i can now manage a few sips in quick consession but really need to get more down me
6) Im only have 3 meals per day but these last few days ive had quavers which have been awsome.
7) Not PB'd as yet or been sick and have not had anything get stuck.
8) My portion sizes are creeping up

Overall all is going a bit too well. Im starting to push my boundaries to see what i can get away with. The other day i had a carvery and ate quite a lot and thought my band had slipped the day after, but after asking questions it was probably down to me eating eggs for breakfast - but lesson learned.
Ive dug out on of my sons cups which holds 6oz and im making sure i dont eat no more than that to try and kerb my portions getting out of control until i get my first fill.
Ive been eating foods like:-
corned beef hash
fish with parsley sauce and mash
chicken with veggies
tuna with mayo
weetabix
porridge
and the odd bit of chocolate

Overall (even without a fill in my 9ml band) im not eating anywhere as much as i used to and this band certainly stops the binging i used to do.

When i eat i have also noticed my body sign that im full. I get a series of hiccupy burps if you know what i mean. I eat maybe 3 or 4 bites more then stop. About 10 minutes after ive finished i get more hiccupy burps. I suppose if i was to carry on eating i would get the iron fist people talk about...but i really dont want to push it.

Not noticing any weight loss as yet, but i never do until im at least down 2 stone. I have measured myself and ive lost 4 inces from my waist, 3 from tummy, 2 from thighs and 2.5 from under my boobs. Im pleased with this.

Im thinking of getting an exercise bike for the house too. Im really struggling to exercise. I cannot exercise when i get up, i prefer to do it at the end of the day. When i get in from night shift its still too dark to go out for a walk (and unsafe maybe) and ill make too much noise pratting about on the wii fit. Im going to have a look on ebay and see if i can get a cheapo one and see how i get on.

So i need more water and more exercise.

I love reading your diary! Its inspiring. I guess you must be feeling the restriction...when do you get your first bandfill?

Hi MrsPill, im going to liverpool for a check-up this thursday and hopefully they will book me in 2 weeks time for my 1st fill. I do have quite good restriction at the moment really, but my portions sizes are creeping up, so i do need a fill.

I'll look forward to seeing how that goes. Its hard for me to imagine what it all feels like. I've had dominos pizza for tea and I feel so full I feel like a burst couch! So my expectations of a band are that I will feel like this after 1 ryvita.. haha...(actually, I'm not joking!!)
I feel nervous that I will be still too hungry after having it fitted. but I really dont want a bypass or a sleeve.

At the moment i could probably eat 4 ryvita with philly on them where in the past half a pack would still not touch the sides. The thought of eating a whole pizza now is just impossible.
Hunger is also different, in my opinion. Before the band i would get naggy and shaky when the hunger pangs started but now, i just know its time to eat and there is no naggy-ness or shaking. You will know what i mean when you get yours.

I had my dinner at 8pm last night and ive had nothing until just now, where ive had 4 krisprolls with philly and feel very full.

I hate that hunger feeling now. It makes me feel desperate! Roll on surgery.
So glad you're getting used to your band. Did you ever consider the sleeve or bypass?

Yes i did consider all options but i was put off from the drastic surgery involved in the two, plus the cost of them and this 'dumping' really did not appeal to me. The recovery time would also be an issue as i only had 2 weeks off work and really couldnt afford to go back into work not being able to carry out my role 100%. Lastly there was the cost of these.

I opted for the band as i WAS a large portion eater. I would make myself a lovely healthy low fat salad, but make it big enough to feed 2 and eat it all.
If i went out for a meal, i would have 3 courses and sit there until it was so stuffed i got pains in my belly. Ive never been a 'picker' or 'grazer', so the band suits my eating habits.

Ive finally got my work blackberry mobile phone and ive downloaded the 'my fitness pal' app which is brilliant. Its easy to hand and each time i eat and drink im logging it on the app. Each day this week ive eaten below 1000 calories but the weight still is not shifting (wont know for sure until tomorrow morning - but i know). According to the app, by having 1000 calories a day i should drop about 2.8lbs per week.

I also had my check up with my provider. I travelled for 1 hour for a 5 minute appointment. I must admit im a bit disappointed with thier service. I have been getting weekly phone calls from a dietician which is useful, but that check-up was a waste of my time and i did feel like a number when i was there. She rattled off a series of closed question which i could only answer yes or no to. There was no real conversation of effort to get to know me.
We shall see if things improve when i go to see her next for my fill, but i very much doubt it.

So i can resume 'normal' eating!
Yes ive tried a biscuit or two and some crisps but im still avoiding foods like pasta, bread, rice, fruit and salad vegatables as im petrified of them getting stuck. I know ive to crack-on as it might be, so tomorrow ill try salad vegetables. If they go down ok at least i can take a salad to work with me.

Today i ate 1 beef burger for my lunch and felt really full after it so the band is having some restriction even with nothing in it. There is no way on this planet could i eat the amount of foods i used to. The £6k is worth it just for that. I then didnt get hungry until 7pm when i had a side plate of beef roast dinner....it took me 45 minutes to eat it.

I still need to up my water intake but im really finding it hard as i cant gulp it down. Tea & coffee seem to go down better due to the heat as maybe i get my fluid from them and not straight water? ill try this week having plenty of tea during the day.

Exercise has been non-existant. I just dont have the time. Im working 10 hour night shifts then getting my sleep.
This week im going to try and go for a quick 20 minute walk when i wake up.

Head hunger. Its still there but easier to handle then pre-band. Take right now for example. I feel very full after my roast dinner but my head is telling me to eat some of my sons crisps. I know if i eat them ill probably be sick so this help me, but for information, head hunger doesnt go away.

Really interesting post. Particularly about the fluids. I can't imagine not being able to gulp water down if you're thirsty.
Re: exercise... don't you walk around with your job? I would think that helps :)

hi Tam, youre doing well. I am waiting for your weigh-in so hurry up lol. I am on mushies today and looking forward to it. I was at a party last night (just for 2 hours), i drank 2 glasses of water and had some doritio crisps. I was fine eating them.. This morning I tried to have fruit cocktail.. but thats a definete no no. it got stuck, the brick appeared in my chest and i had to spit it all out. I ended up with a poached egg and a slice of toast, was nervous eating it, but all has went down well xx

great posts ladys, love reading them. four weeks post op now and enjoying my mushys. had a mad moment yesterday, ate a french fry of my grandaughters kentucky, Big mistake got stuck and i bought it back up. neadless to say i wont be doin that again, mind you it was the first time i actualy felt restriction. so maybe it has done me good. its so easy to become addicted to weighing myself, i am now trying to leave it for a few days. so far just over a stone off anf feel like ive won the lottery.

1lb off this week...and people are starting to notice.

Thanks everyone for the lovely comments and encouragement, it does help knowing your not on your own on this journey.

Went on my wii fit today and burned 250 calories and had my jeans on. Big mistake as every minute i had to pause and pull them up. My hubby said "oh for god sake girl, just go and take them off" but no way was i doing that, as only a few weeks ago these jeans were leaving red marks across my tummy as they were tight. I revelled in the fact these are getting way too big for me.

Just sent hubby to the chinese for some sweetcorn soup and prawn crackers. He will also get some prawn toast for my son so im going to try a piece and see how i get on.

Ordered my dress for the charity ball on saturday. Its the long black one i posted about mid week. I hope it fits nicely, ive checked the measurements and it should. Ive also bought a blondy brown long curly wig. Ive got a few wigs but none suitable for this ball. Just get my eyebrows shaped this week and ill be ready for a good night out.
I am worried about drinking alcohol and how im going to react to it but im planning on sticking to vodka and orange juice and sipping it slowly. Food wise im not bothered as we will all be chatting so much i can afford to take my time.

This week im going to make an appointment for my 1st fill. I rekon it will be at least 3 weeks away as im not prepared to travel further than liverpool for a fill.

Have a great week everyone and see you next week on the loosers bench.

1/4lb off this week!

Not the greatest but considering im 80% pure will power im glad its coming off and not going on.
Ive booked my first fill for 2nd june at Liverpool and it cant come quick enough.
Ive noticed this week that portion sizes are definately going up. I can easily eat a full ready meal.

Food choices have not been the best, water intake is crap and zero exercise done and my job really isnt helping me.
We have been so busy in work that regularly ive been doing 14 hour night shifts. Im not seeing my little boy as much and housework and food shopping have been non-existant so surviving on crap really....i need to get a grip!

Went to McDonalds last night and i ordered a fillet-o-fish. I got about quater of the way through it when one bit got stuck. This was my 1st experience of something getting stuck properly. It felt awful and i started to salivate a lot. The more i tried to swollow the more it came, so i went to the loo and just had to spit it out. The walking to the loo must have helped the food go down as i was right as rain after i spit out the saliva. I was not sick.
I then went back to the table, removed the bread and finished the fish with no problems.
This just shows that the band is always working!

So sorry that ive not been around much, mondays between 9am - 11am is about the only free time im getting at the moment. I seriously need to re-evaluate my life.

Have a great week everyone!

well done tam!

i have been to macdonalds a few times since band (old habits die hard!)

had a fillet o fish but ate is mega slow and minus the bun, chips and drink! lolz

also had the double cheeseburger minus the bun...loadsa prtoein...loadsa fat!!! :p

did get something stuck as well this weekend., we were coming back from tesco and was so hungry so had a small bite of hubby's chelsea bun....ooh that was painful...im glad carbs dont agree with me!

have had a few sticky moments too. it aint nice, but its mostly bread which i am now reluctant to eat. i am only 3 weeks post op and feel that i could eat more than what i am. 4 weeks until i get my first fill arghhhhhhhhh

I wish bread & crisps would be banned!

I feel thats all im eating and its because ive been on training courses this week and not done a tesco shop so ive nothing else in the house.
Im also struggling big time to exercise, i feel like i have no time, and when i am at home with the family and i dont want to do anything (not even housework) as im seriously cherishing my time with them.
Ive got to re-evaluate my job....its definately taking over my life. Money is great and i so need it after paying for this band on credit cards.

Band is behaving itself, but its sooooo easy to get naughty foods down at the moment. I think im still about 1000-1200 calories per day even if the calories are from crap foods. Ive not even had time to track my calories on the myfitnesspal app i have....can you tell this is getting me down!

I was just reading mauras diary and she has just lost her job.....i really would like to loose mine at the moment and get a big pay out but ive not even been there 12 months yet. When i was made redundant last year i put on 3 stone. Looking back, i should have paid for the band with my redundancy money and taken the time to exercise and get my life sorted.....Oh if only!!!!

I would love to find a job where i could work from home and earn good money. How nice would it be to do a few hours then go for a walk, prepare homemade meals and spend time with the family. Ive tried looking but the money is poor.

Work trousers are looser and starting to hang off the bum a little, still not enough to go down a size as nothing seems to be shifting from my tummy.

Weather is meant to be devine this weekend, so im making plans to be out and about. Im fancying a BIG BIG BIG BIG walk somewhere and i may even borrow my dads mountain bike and go for a ride. Ive not ridden a bike since i was a kid, so that in itself should be fun. There will of course be a BBQ if weather is good.

Ive noticed that Neen is doing low carb foods. I know that low carbing works for me, so i may start to have a think about this and try from next week when i do my food shop. Chicken for breakfast, tuna green salad for lunch and steak with cauliflower cheese for dinner is my type of foods...and of course ill have to follow that with sf jelly and double cream! Not sure about calories, so may have to work them out.

Anyway, im off to do my housework before i get my head down for a few hours ready for tonights night shift.
