Yes and no would be my answer. With the bypass your eating is more restricted (low sugar & low fat) and you have to take supplements for the rest of your life. With the band you have to have fills until you get the correct restriction for weight loss so you do have more doctor appointments. Both ops have required follow-ups to check your health and weightloss for the first 2 years.
So yes, you might have more doctor appointments with the band. However, you do have to change your eating habits and take suppliments forever with the bypass. So it depends on what you mean by maintenance.
To be honest I never really considered the band as an option for me. I knew that I would need a drastic metabolic change to break me of my life long habbits. I am a snacker and I like sweets & fatty foods. I love things that are deep fried, I am from a Southern family in America and fat is pratically a food group there! I knew that I needed something that would make me completely change the way I handle meals and eating in general. I had a friend who was successful with the band and lost lots of weight but had trouble keeping the right restriction (often it was too tight and she was sick alot). I knew if I encountered that obstacle I would be likely to just give up and have the band emptied. I did not want that option.
I think that the people I have encountered here that have the band do it the right way and show a lot of strength in how they use it. They show how it should and can work for anybody. I however did not know them before I made up my mind. I wanted the fear of dumping to help me avoid my bad habbits until I could get them under control. That is not to say that the bypass is a better option than the band. The bypass is a life long commitment to supplements and an altered internal system which is not the best choice for everyone. It is also not fail proof like some people think. However, research is finding that the bypass alone (not adding the weight loss, just the surgery) can be a cure for type 2 diabetes. For me, that is literally a life saving thing. I have grandparents on both sides who died from diabetes related diseases so I knew this was the surgery for me.
Sorry to ramble but you asked and I wanted you to be clear that it was a very personal choice for me.
