POSE Surgery

Hi Lynda, i had pose last march, didnt work for me either,i got it done by Mr Agwonobi in Manchester
via the national obesity surgery centre, who were in regular touch with me up until about November , but i have never had an appointment to see the consultant again, no doubt had it been a success iwould of had one, would like to take things further but im so ashamed, humiliated and upset idont think i have it in me to kick off, however if reading this puts someone off the idea of pose then at least ive done something...will be really interested to hear how you get on....

I saw a dietician today. She said I has made the right choice in opting for a band as all her patients had lost weight initially, then stopped and gradually put it back on. She said she has some very disappointed patients. It's time this WLS was reviewed!

Hi toots .your right I did have pose and it was rubbish from the start .I actually tried to convince myself that it was working .I felt hungry the day after the op and it didn't change .I have not even been able to get NOSC to ring me back after tons of messages being left for them by myself .The only thing they said was that because I had the op it had worked .Yes my reaction was probably the same as yours .I have had to walk away from the whole thing as i i was getting more and more down about it all .Also j was getting fatter and fatter .I have no chance of a refund( £8000 ) .This was a huge deal for me not just the money but the whole situation, and the attitude of the company is awful .I think I remember you from the other thread .Did you also have pose and were you disappointed with it .I had mine at the Alex in Manchester with Agwanobi (possibly spelt wrong) .I had the band fitted on the 19 th and the difference is astounding .I have lost a stone already ,of course this is down to fluids only and no appetite after the op .My appetite is coming back a bit now which is as it should be .I hope this long message has not put you to sleep .please let me know if you have any news .Liz xxx

Hi toots it's me again .I wasnt actually allowed to speak to the surgeon .I meant to say this to you in my last message .I was supposed to have 2 years after service so to speak ,dieticians and councillor support .No sign of them once I complained .I went with The Hospital Group for the band .It was highly recommended .Liz xxx

I have just e mailed the TV Show Rip Off Britain about pose !! if anyone else feels they were ripped off with Pose, it can only help if you too could drop them an e mail .

thanks

Brilliant! I had been thinking on exactly the same lines. Please - let me know what, if any, response you get. Like do they require more examples.

Will have more to say......

Just to say; I've been to see a solicitor regarding POSE. The lady I saw is going to bring it to her colleagues' attention when they have their weekly meeting next week to see if there is anything legally that can be done and she'll get back to me on that. She did say, however, that if several of us raised this with solicitors around the country (at no cost to us - we're entitled to a half hour free) then it could be brought to court as a 'class act'. Just like on the telly, ha! However, I told her that I would be taking this further regardless of their decision - and by that I meant going to the media/press. She said I was perfectly free to do that as long as everything that I (we) tell them is the truth - which it IS! So I'm hoping there will be further developments on this.

I think you mean "class action": Class action - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Having read quite a lot of this thread how badly many of you have fared having paid for expensive private POSE surgery and found it to basically "not work" I would agree, you WOULD have 'strength in numbers'.

If one person tried to sue on their own the individual clinic would be likely to do everything they could to strike out the claim, stating their defence as being (something like) the "patient was not compliant with the post operative eating regimen" etc.

However, if 50 or 100 of you POSE patients brought the same action and can prove (even if evidence is anecdotal not scientific) that despite all your best efforts to lose weight, the POSE procedure has not worked, then you would stand a fighting chance.

LyndaB:

In order to start up a "class action" you might want to search other online forums (PM me if you want a list -- I take part in or view at least half a dozen) or google things like "my failed POSE surgery" ..... or "my experience of POSE" ..... because I bet there are 100's of others out there who are not all members of this particular forum.

Best wishes,
Sharon

Stillbig: see my notes to LyndaB above.

Although I myself am not a POSE person at all (having been fortunate enough to get funding on the NHS) I have been appalled by this thread:

I really hope for all of YOU (the people who wasted money on POSE) that you do get some action, and possibly enough negative bad publicity to stop those clinics offering POSE.

It also bothers me / annoys me that all those clinics who offer POSE could just as easily offer the wrap, which would seem to be much more effective (based on all anecdotal evidence about the wrap).

Yes, your're right, Sharon. I did mean 'class action'. When I was typing it I thought it looked a bit odd! But I was so enthused by having seen the solicitor (albeit no decision has been made yet) I wanted those that were interested in this sad tale to hear the latest developments and to "act" on it.
As I see it;by the very nature of this procedure and the reasons that we've opted for it there is already a sense of humiliation and failure (which I'm sure most of us know about anyway) that prevents us from seeing lawyers, going to court, expressing our disappointment to the hospital authorities concerned etc. We're used to taking our feelings and shoving them out of other people's sight, so to speak out about this is going to take some courage. It would be great if more people who have negative experiences of POSE could become involved. There would be strength in numbers.
And, again, Sharon you are right. I wish a gastric wrap had been suggested as there is longer term data available showing that it is more effective.

Thank you for your suggestions; I shall research further.

Lynda

hi Lynda, you have hit the nail in the head, the reason i dont think i have the fight in me to complain about this
is the humiliation and embarrasment ,i also feel i have let my husband and family down due to the implications of paying back the £8000 loan for the next few years, however i just cant believe they can get away with this, so let me know what i have to do and iwill, i will start with trying to find any others out there who have been failed by pose...still no reply from rip off britain..x

Hi Stillbig,
I know it's a big ask but could you/would you check out which solicitors, locally to you, would be willing to see you for free. Even if they won't do it they can suggest another firm that may specialise in this type of legal action. I think that if the word gets about and then with more people bringing it to the notice of the legal system we have more of a chance of something being done.
My heart really goes out to you; still paying for something that has been a complete waste. Personally, I had worked and saved hard, over several years, for some sort of procedure that was going to sort out not only the weight problem but the appetite issue so when I came across POSE I thought that it was the answer. And it's because of you, me and the others that have been sold down the river that I want to pursue this. Apart from anything else, ethically and morally, some body/organisation should acknowledge their responsibility.

Lynda

linda, can you give me a week or 2, im waiting on a reply from the hospital i got my surgery done, i hadnt complained before now.

Response? What response? They didn't want to know - and kept referring me to the surgeon that did the procedure. Of course, I had already been in contact with him over the preceding months and that was the reason I finally contacted the hospital. Basically, got no positive outcome from either. I am now waiting to hear from the lawyer but I don't hold out much hope. However, I'm not finished yet and am continuing to pursue. Maybe you'll see this in the Daily Mail yet!

Hi there,

I had the POSE procedure done 4 weeks ago in Leeds, though I am not sure I would have done if I had read lots of the comments on this thread (sorry to hear about your bad experiences). It's obviously very early days but my experience to date has been pretty good. I spent 2 weeks on liquids but didn't feel hungry. I am now on solid food (avoiding bread, potatoes, pasta and all carbonated drinks) and after losing a stone or so in the first week, have settled into a steadier weight loss pattern. I have now lost more than 2 stone and genuinely don't have the hunger cravings to the same extent as I had pre-op. When I do eat, I can probably eat around half of what I could eat previously before feeling really very full. Early days as I say, but so far so good.

marcusj did you fund the surgery youself if so how much does it cost? and would you recommend it.

Hi there
Congrats marcusj, that is a great loss!

I have hit a wall weight loss wise... It may even be going in the wrong direction, bit scared to weigh in! I have been getting really hungry & eating more as a result. i am going to see my surgeon & the dietician on Friday; my surgeon noted that this had happened to others who had the POSE procedure done earlier on. He is very supportive and has also written to the manufacturer of the device for insight. He has performed revision surgery before for some patients.
I will let you all know how it goes...it is a shame that not everyone has had support like this - maybe what he says/suggests can set a precedent to take to your surgeons??
I am still lighter & happy about that, just not so thrilled about the hunger and quantity I could manage to eat
Toots x

Hi Sunny69 - I did fund the surgery myself and it cost around £8,700. It's hard to say at this stage whether I would recommend it. As I say, so far so good but maybe Toots would have a better view as he or she (probably she!) is further along the road. I am definitely going to keep posting though and will share my journey with you! If you have any specific questions, don't hesitate to get in touch.
