What a great idea.
Hello everyone I’m John and I live in Wombourne, I’m under Staffordshire PCT my BMI was 59.6 and I weighed in at 178kg (28 stone) at my first visit to the Manor to see Dr Hartland.

I have high blood pressure, type 2 Diabetes, aching legs and back obviously and I’m 59 years old

My GP had never had anyone ask for this surgery before so he didn’t know what to do, he then wrote to Mr Khan for advice, when he received a reply he saw me again about 2 weeks later, after which he referred me to the Manor, that was the 8th August 2008.

My first appointment was with Dr Hartland only and that was on September 22nd.

This is the point the Manor applied for my funding and is the longest wait I had.

My second appointment was to have all the medical tests and fill out lots of forms with a nurse, this was on 14th November.

Mr third appointment was with Mr Youseff and that was on the 2nd December.

My letter offering me a surgery date came on the 5th December and that date was to be 17th of January 2009.

And that’s when I had it done

I never met Mr Khan, Ms Heitmann, Ana Elshaw, Georgia Windrass or Dr Kendric.

Mr Khan came to shake my hand in the corridor as I walked in to theatre, Ana Elshaw and Dr Hartland came to give me my medication on the last day as I was leaving the hospital and Georgia Windrass phoned me at home the following day to tell she would be sending me some diet information in the post, the rest of the team I have never met.
Hello John, carry on, I love reading about everyones experiences. Great blog by the way. x

:(Boo Hoo,thought i might have received a letter today to see consultant might ring them monday xx

what day was it you spoke to Tracey hun?

Tusday but just rung her and she is ringing me back inabit cus she said oh yes we have spoken about you and not just me but all the people from walsall aint getting any funding,i,ll let u know what she says.

I think thats terrible that a whole region can be refused funding for surgery - whatever their circumstances. Seems a bit hypocritcal when its the same region that is making plenty of money as a centre of excellence for Bariatric surgery for people from neighbouring PCT's.

Good Luck Sarah x

She has just rung me back and told me ive gotta wait for a susan gill to contact me,then i gotta do slimming course likw ww and sw!! ive just said thats why i want bypass cus ive done all that and she says i gotta do it again! Alot of things dont normally get to me but this has made me so upset,if i had the money i would av it done tomorrow, but being a single mom with 2 kids is hard enough and people wont give me a loan x

Hi Sarah, I'm really sorry to hear about your news, I can understand your frustration and if I was rich I would give you the money! See what this other lady has to say and take it from there chucks!

Oh hun Im sorry. :hug99:

What does it say on the BOSPA website about walsalls criteria for WLS. Can you appeal?

Hun, if you meet the guidelines then you may just have to do this weight management via WW or SW to tick the final box just to prove that you have tried everything.

When this lady rings you, I would suggest that you dont dismiss the idea of weight management straight away. But do stress that you have tried this before and that you do meet the criteria for WLS.

Im not certain about the appeal process, but I would think that PALS at the hospital would be a good place to start. Especially as you havent even been given the opportunity to see a doctor at the hospital yet. Otherwise, is your GP supportive? Would he help you with an appeal?

Dont give up hope yet chick.

hope you get it sorted out soon sarah, it does sound really bad that they getting money from other pcts but not giving any out in there own.

good advice from sam because if they are asking fro documented proof of weight management this will give it to them and show that you are wiliing to do what ever it takes. Then you can argue that you have meet the criteria even more by having the documented evidence that the nice guidelines stipulate. On a Plus note if you do slimming world you can get it paid for by the gp 12 weeks at a time.( I know its no concolation just tryong to look on the bright side)

My doctor isnt really that supportive was thinking about changin gp,s and find a gp that wud help xx Not sure that wud make a difference though as the hospital is higher than them,i think!
