I will be open Rach as Ive been told that my PCT (Bham East and North) will not fund keyhole due to the cost difference

open same as sam

Hi racheal I am having open surgery weren't happy about it first coz it's longer period in hospital so I rang sandwell pct to see if I can pay xtra to have keyhole they said I can but it's an extra £4,500 they said they have told mr khan to lower the price but they won't but I did have the option from the pct that I could go heartlands coz they will pay for keyhole there but I trust mr khan to look after me so I am staying with open but I think wlwb is considering paying the differnce

I am back, minus the cotton bud! A very nice male nurse picked it out for me and yes, gave the the elbow lecture.

Thnaks for the welfare enquiries fellow mini mad peeps :D

Rachel, I am having open surgery too as I have had a previous hernia repair op which makes keyhole difficult and also, my PCT (same one as Sam & Terri) won't fund keyhole.

I think a few of us have the blues this week. Bring on the sunshine, I say!

I am just wodnering if the open is like a big nasty scar….i just want to make sure I can tell Dr.Khan everything tomorrow.

Ana told me that the open incision is around 30cm from under the breastbone towards the navel.

Brun's right that's exactly what it's like.
Mine was very neat and healing nicely but I've got just a little bit of weeping now, right in the middle of it there's a red patch, about the size of a 50p and in the centre a small hole, which should have healed by now, when I shower the scab comes off that part and it weeps out something not very nice, it's a bit tender in that spot as well.
All the rest of the scar is knitting together nicely.:)

Aahh right thank you guys :D
xx

I have written this up today for my appointment tomorrow, do you think that this is ok? Or am I missing anything?

Questions to ask:

  • What surgery would you recommend for me?
  • What would you say should be my goal weight?
  • Would I be able to continue my normal exercise regime?
  • Would I be ok to increase my exercise?
  • I have already spoken to Dr.Hartland and Nurse Anna at a meeting I went to in January, but I would just like to clear things up with regards to pregnancy. What sort of things would I have to do differently if any?
  • Would I have to do any special diet pre, pre op diet?
  • I am a worrier, so would it be possible to see a councillor?
  • Waiting List? Next appointment?
  • (If they say no, ask why?)

Medication I am on:

Cerazette (Mini Pill)
40mg Citalopram (Anti-Depressants)

Thats great question wise. From memory they won't ask you about any previous diet or weight loss as they tend to get the info they need from your gp prior to your appointment as they tend to already have made the decission before seeing you its jut to make sure that you understand teh pro and cons of the procedure/s and that you still want to proceed.

Rach, My experience was same as Terri's. There was no going over past history or anything like that, just an explanation of the different types of surgery and an opportunity for me to ask questions (which were all similar to yours except for the pregnancy) One extra thing I did ask about was about mortality rates and complications as I wanted to show them that I was aware of risks, and also I want to be able to go into surgery knowing everything that could possibly go wrong.

Hi, Rach,
I think he will ask if you have had any previous surgery xx

Just to add to what I have just posted, with hindsight I would now also be asking

HOw long they recommend you take off work?

Also I know you are concerned about the scarring so get them to confirm where the incision is, how long etc...

Also, whether your PCT will pay for keyhole surgery or not

And finally, not sure if this is a consideration for you or not as you intend to have babies, but if necessary, will they support any application for plastic surgery if it is needed

Glad to hear you're back in the land of the hearing Brun!!! You did make me laugh though!!:D

Rach - possibly ask him what you can do to get yourself in the best possible shape for surgery. Prep work so to say.
