I never had any letters, only the ones with Pre-op dates. We are all different it must be the pct's or is it, just the way WM works?

Glad to hear your feeling better Red.

Terri your Pre-ops will be fine hun...I am just hoping one of you will be in with me, when i go for mine.

Cheers CG ;) (still not hugging 'cos I'm still infectious.... urrggghhh)

Exactly, the only letters I had (and Terri AFAIK) are the 'MBE' ones - which are the pre-op assessment dates. Nowt from the PCT. And you are a different PCT to Terri & I.

Sorry to ask u've probably gone thru it so many times but as im new....
What happens at your first appointment after referal?
what happens after that?
what is a pre op?
and finally after pre op is that it then? you get your date and opp??

Sorry to be a pain its just a bit confusing with all the abbreviations and names n appointments etc lol.

Hi ST,

As you are same PCT as me, it will hopefully go thus:

  • You go to Dr.
  • Dr. refers you to WM
  • WM then send you an appointment (we are calling this the initial appointment). At this appointment you are weighed, have a chat with Ana (the bariatric specialist nurse and Dr. Hartland - some have seen Mr. Khan himself apparently). You will discuss your eating habits and then the options are put to you i.e. band or bypass.
  • If you're ok with it all at that point, your file is then - at some point! - passed to Patient Access -Tracey Lowe) for funding application to be made.
  • Tracey then applies to your PCT (which for you is BENPCT)
  • PCT then makes a decision
  • If yes, you are then put on the waiting list and you should then receive your 'MBE' (Magic Brown Envelope) giving you your two pre-op assessment dates. This is confirmation that funding is OK, 'cos otherwise, WM would not put you on their list.
I have also got to see the psychologist, which some people do and some don't. Some people see him after their op! I'm seeing him 3 days after my 2nd pre-op assessment.

Experience with WM has taught us that checks on the progress of your case do need to be made as admin mistakes are prevalent and there does seem to be a bottleneck, though I know they are getting as many clinics as they can in.

The post-op peeps will give you more detailed info re: pre-op assessments. I know that they ECG you, go MRSA swabs etc. The second one is where you will see the anaesthetist.

Do you or anyone else know if the funding runs out this time of year?? because my initial appointment it on 6th March and i know April is the next tax year so money will be nearly gone if not gone already??

No probs.

It can be a bit hairy this time of year, but to be honest, they want to spend their cash because any that doesn't get spent, they get deducted from the next financial year. As we are so close to end of year (31st March), you case will probably come out of 09/10 budgets anyway.

oh really, yeah that makes sense. I always have such bad luck i'm hoping this goes smooth for a change lol.

Once you've set your mind on it you just wanna get there don't you.

Thanks for your help anyway x

Hi Rach, Just wondered what you are needing to speak to Dr H about? Have you received another letter or something?

Hey Twiggy!

Red has already answered your questions it seems, but you will have to try to come along to one of our very important meetings soon!

They usually take place in hawthorn cafe or have been known to take place at my place or maccys... I know its difficult for you because you work full time but we could perhaps could have a weekend meeting, or if you could escape work for an hour one day we could meet at the cafe near your work...

Angela and I had briefly mentioned the possibility of a meet up on MOnday morning? Do you know whether you could make it??

Failing that, we are having a bigger meet up in town on Sat 28th Feb near the bull ring. I could pick you up and you could come to that one with me if you like.

The waiting is the worst and to be honest, although we complain loads here, we are in a much better place than some areas and as it turns out, some of us are geographically close so can at least get together and rant etc!

Sadly, there are people on the WLS forum who are still fighting for funding 2 years down the line who are in obvious need of this procedure and my heart goes out to them.

ST, while I think about it, one piece of advice I would give is to research the procedures and what they entail before your initial appointment. Think about what kind of eater you are. Do you cruise? Or do you eat large portions? Do you binge? This could have bearing on what procedure is best for you. i.e I went in thinking band but it became apparent very quickly that bypass was by far the better option for me. The BOSPA site is a good starting place for research.

Whatever, we are all helping each other walk the journey, so keep talking. :D

If you've made the ticker you've done the hard bit lol. You need to go into userCP to update your signature, then copy and paste into there. Make sure it is the BB code that you copy and paste - not the other code!
