Allergic to food and immune to diets: my gastric bypass story

Hi sara,
I had pains just near to or where my scars are, my surgeon told me that it was the internal stiches pulling slightly as I healed up inside, I had that feeling for a couple of months after the op, but they have more or less gone now. To be on safe side check with your doctor! Great stuff hun ,keep up the good work.

Hi Livvy and Caroline,
Thanks for taking time to advise me. It feels different to trapped wind, it's more like an ache. Having said that, my body is sooo different now and even feeling full feels different so it may be that. It may be those nasty stitches doing their adjusting. I wish my insides could talk to me!! It's still there today, but I have avoided the gym and taken my doggies for a long walk instead. If it carries on I'll seek medical advice. I like you new pic, Livvy, by the way.
I got up early today to write, but could not believe it when I dumped from fat free yoghurt of all things!! That's just typical of my body: it's fine with a 3 course meal, but yoghurt is a big no no today. Strange. Don't worry, I wasn't physically sick. I just felt tired and nauseous, had lower belly pain and had to rush to the toilet. After lying down for a bit, I was fine.I'm feeling better now and am contemplating lunch. mmm

Well, it's not been my day today. As you all know I have that pain in my side since Saturday night. Then this morning I dumped on yoghurt. I have now read the ingredients and there is sugar and sweetener in it. No wonder I felt sick! Then, after working a couple of hours tonight, my lower belly feels really bloated and feels like I have trapped wind! I spoke too early about trapped wind pains this afternoon and now it's got me. I can't believe it. I haven't had a single pain for weeks and now the pain monsters are after me big time! Lol. I really need to eat in a bit, but I think I'll have a nice soak in the bath first to see if my bloating goes away. Sorry to moan!!

Oh mate those dreaded hidden sugars eh ! aw yeah have a nice bath and relax and see what you fancy to eat after. From now on you'll have to check everything you buy until you get used to certain products etc. Hope you'll be alright chick . Trapped wind will release itself eventually . Just rest up xxx

Thanks Livvy,
Well, I had a lie in today and the pain in my side isn't as bad, thank God! I still have trapped wind pains and have decided to eat soup for lunch so that it's not too heavy. Even that filled me up big time. Good news though, the scales have moved! I lost a pound today, so now I've lost 2 stone and 8 pounds. I'm so pleased that it's coming off. Something is better than nothing.
I also got a call to ask whether I would write a feature for the university alumni magazine about an honorary graduate. Yet another piece of writing for my profile! Can't be bad.

thats great Sara! it'll be the pulitzer next! well done on the loss too :)

Thanks Shel. You know a lot about medaication. The only trapped wind/acid indigestion/heartburn tablets I have are Bisodol. Do you know if these are like Windeze, which Livvy takes, and whether I'm safe to take one? There is sodium biocarbonate, calcium carbonate, light magnesium carbonate, saccharin, maize starch, sucrose, calcium stearate and peppermint oil flafouring in them. I'm just in agony with trapped wind and want to help it along.

Sara...

Bisodol the active ingredients are sodium biocarbonate, calcium carbonate and light magnesium carbonate. Ignore the rest.

Windeze the active ingredient is Simeticone, so both work in very different ways.

Bisodol is a multi-purpose thing, like you said for heartburn, indigestion etc, whereas Windeze is designed specifically to ease wind. Deflatine works the same as Windeze, so those two are either/or.

With windeze/deflatine, its designed to reduce the pain and bloating of wind, so if that is the problem you're having then I would go for that over the bisodol. I've used windeze for years cos of my IBS and find it works for me very quickly.

Both windeze and deflatine come in chewable versions so easy to take :)

Alternatively, peppermint cordial or tea is the best natural remedy for wind, not sure if it would be too sugary though. And its an acquired taste!

HTH.

Shel

hmmm just been looking on the deflatine website, and deflatine also contains calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate to help with indegestion, so that would be like having bisodol and windeze together. Also this is from their website -

Avoid food and drinks that are more likely to cause trapped wind:
- cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts
- turnips, onions, leeks
- garlic
- fennel, sunflower and poppy seeds
- fizzy drinks, such as colas and beer

Looking at wind-eze, its just simeticone, so could take that as well as bisodol.

Hi everyone,
Well, today's been another difficult day for me. Last night I couldn't sleep and, eventually, decided to get up and do some of my writing because it was more productive than lying in bed. I still wasn't tired so took some wine, which makes me sleepy. At 5am I went to bed, with a very rumbly belly, and was up at 8.45 to go to the dentist. Having to drink with my tablets, I had no time for breakfast before rushing out half asleep. It took ages at the dentist, by which time my belly was bloated and painful again. I nipped to the shop to buy yoghurt, one which I know doesn't make me sick, unlike the sugary one that I took by mistake on Monday. I also picked up some deflatine. I had yoghurt and yoghurt for a late breakfast at lunchtime and then went to bed for a few hours. I had to rush to the toilet several times due to the effect of the deflatine and the watery soup that I had taken yesterday because I couldn't face solids. I felt rotten and nauseous going to work, still tired and in pain. It seemed to have settled by the time I got home, but started again when I walked the dogs. I forced myself to eat solids for tea. although I was bloated. It seems to have made me feel less sick, but my belly is still feeling dodgy.
Since I had my gastric bypass, over six weeks ago, I have never thrown up. I thought the worst was over after my constipation, but now it feels like my body just retains a lot of gas in my lower belly and then decides to give me random bowel movements. I know that I should be glad that I'm not vomiting, but since being on solids I have had problems. My soup, yesterday was an attempt to go back to basics, but that made me feel worse. The only solids that i am eating are soft and I chew for ages. I'm also drinking plenty of fluids. I haven't introduced new foods into my diet this week and haven't eaten stodgy foods like bread. The only thing that I know was wrong was the misleading fat free, but sugary, yoghurt on Monday. Surelyit shouldn't affect me for over 48 hours, should it? Due to my weird working hours and self study, I haven't been eating at the same time every day, but I am trying my best to have 3-4 4 tablespoon meals a day. Tomorrow I am going to try to eat at regular meal times to see if that helps. My weight has now plateaued again.

Sorry to moan, but I would appreciate any tips to reduce the discomfort. Than you!!

Oh poor you :( It's so annoying to have the physical discomfort when you are so desparate to begin the new phase of life. Can you have something like actimel to help with good bacteria in your gut and maybe benefibre powder in your drinks to help move things along without causing you so much pain? I know I harp on about the fibre stuff but I was glad I had it, I found things felt more normal as I had the runs for days and it was horrible. It does help with constipation as well, it kind of normalises things. I had deflatine as well then ran out of that and got bisodol which worked ok as well. Can you maybe do very gentle squats to help your digestion work? The movement is meant to naturally help all that. (very very gentle squats!!!) I know a lot of fruit and fruit juice can really ferment and give you gut trouble too...,maybe looking up some herbal teas that help digestion would help as well? like peppermint and fennel (I think)
Might be worth contacting the hospital too just in case , you need not suffer additional discomfort, make the most of the aftercare available xxxxx wishing you well
