Allergic to food and immune to diets: my gastric bypass story

Hi everyone,
Well, I thought today was going to be something of a non-starter. I got up late and have to wait for someone to come over to repair my washing machine. I'm sat here dressed ready for the gym, but haven't been able to go yet. I tried to cut the capsule for one of the tablets that the GP gave me and it was full of orange goo. On tasting it, I had to brush my teeth because it tasted vile. Never again will I do that! I had a quorn hot dog sausage for breakfast and half a bubble and squeak with mushy peas for lunch, trying to get all the nutrients I can from food to make up for not having a tablet like that again. I may try it when I know that my body can take the bullet sized (only exaggerating a bit) capsule.
I emailed the features editor and he has agreed to let me do some work experience at the Bolton News and, hopefully, I will be able to get some of my dissertation features published. I feel like I have made some progress already!
On the food front, I'm a bit scared. Tommorrow I start on the dreaded solids, but I'm confused as to how much I should eat. I'm also scared to eat things that may stretch my stomach, make me gain weight or make me sick. I've left a message with my dietician and hope that she gets back to me before the 3 course meal tomorrow.

you're doing great Sara! just listen to your tum, if you feel full or uncomfortable you've gone too far and will learn for next time :)

shell is right sara, just take it one day at a time, listen to your body and learn by your mistakes - you are not going to get it all right straight away but it is only by trial and error that you will find out what suits you. All will be fine. It is the quantity not the quality you need to watch - you have lost soo much weight already and you can noo way put it back on just by making one or two wrong choices as you experiment.
Just relax, try new things one at a time, and all will be fine. Good luck xx

Thanks girls!
It's nice to know that whenever I have a worry you're always there. I am too careful for my own good sometimes. I guess I'll have to just listen to my tummy and ignore all the other girls on the hen night! Lol. I'm often quiet when I eat because I'm trying to "tune in" with my tummy. It would be great if it could actually speak, life would be so much easier. I'm just going to be straight with everyone there and say that I've had the op so please don't feel awkward when I just sit there not eating whilst you're digging into pudding!
I just get so confused when I try to research on the internet because there is so much contradicting advice. One says, eat low fat ice cream and brown bread, and another site says avoid them at all costs. Like you both say, it's only one night and as long as I listen to my tummy it should be OK.
Thanks again.
Lots of hugs

we are all here to support each other - make sure you let us know how the hen night goes - bet it turns out not to have been worth all the worry - tis often the case. Most importantly regardless of what you eat, enjoy yourself XX

Hi sara......... i do worry like you, i should be well into eating solids by now, but with all my problems still can't and i think now psycological i am worried if i eat i will gain weight.....

As georgina says.... your stomach will tell you when you are full, an ddon't forget to chew chew and chew.....

As Ali says most of all enjoy yourself!!!!!!!

I agree, would be great if the NHS would pay for that - oops, there goes a flying pig again xxx

Lol, definitely. I'll make a banner and write the leaflets for the campaign Mandy, if you get our Tshirts and organise the parade!
Just had a long chat on the phone with my dietician. She says I'm Ok to take tablets now and to eat most things, unless they're particularly crunchy, fatty or sugary. For bread and starchy foods she said make it moist with sauces and cheese etc and give it a go. She even said that I'm allowed fizzy drinks, but they will fill me up quicker. She suggested I build up to eating 6 tablespoons 3 times a day and a healthy evening snack if I fancy it by week 10. She also said that the aim is to stretch my pouch slightly so that I don't lose too much too fast!!
So tomorrow night I feel will be a very experimaental night!

Thats great Sara, glad your deitician has phoned and put your mind at rest! Let us know how you get on, have you decided what you're having?

Hi Shel,
I have no idea what's on the menu so I may have to make do with the only veggie option or be able to choose. I will either experiment and have a spoonful of each course or just go for one course and make more of an impact on that. I'm just gonna go with the flow now, or try to not panic anyway! Lol.

Hey hun

Great to meet you last night and hope you have a great night tonight xxx

hey hon. have just read your entire thread, ha. i'm glad i got to read your whole experience in one go. don't think i could have hung on to find out how it turned out :)

hope the hen night was a success...

Hi everyone,
I have posted how the hen night went on my other thread. I think I need to think about food less when I go out because I torture myself by thinking that I look daft not eating as much as everyone else and hate to waste good food!
I have weighed myself this morning and I am still at the same weight as last Monday. I know that I can't lose weight every day and my dietician said that it will plateau sometimes, but it is really frustrating!! I am dead on 15 stone and can't wait to be 14 stone something. I'm trying to vary my diet, but nothing will make the scales budge. Any tips?

yes - be patient and persevere!

You know that you are not eating more than your body needs, and you know that you will lose weight. Our bodies are complicated and our weight fluctuates so much. You might be retaining water for some reason and so when that comes out the scales will move. If you strongly feel that they aren't moving and that there is something wrong then speak to your dietician :)

I had a relaxing day today. A massive lie in, followed by pottering around the house and walking the dogs. I have a pain on my right side, just under my scar, but I'm hoping it will go. At least I know I didn;t eat or drink too much last night. It's quite funny that when I cook for other people now, the portions are significantly smaller! I'm probably making everyone I cook for lose weight without even trying!
I went to Asda earlier and bought lots of ready meals and ingredients. I have now frozen them all into my size portions so I will have plenty of variety over the next month or so. It was graet to go shopping and put more in the trolley!!

Hi Sara, i have had a different op to u (banded) however today i had to pop to my surgeon because i have mouth thrush from the Anti B's but got some medicine and i'll be fine now wahooo !! anyway also in my consultation i told him that i have no pain stomach wise but this nagging feeling under by boobies and he said its trapped wind. he said it will always come and go with anytype of WLS and certain foods produce certain gas build up its not always because u have overeaten etc i do wonder if your syptoms are that. He told me that when i feel that to use my gripe water or windeze and for the future too. See how u get on over the next few days and if it doesn't subside maybe get it checked out with your GP. Just also wanted to say well done on your weightloss to date. have been reading your posts and they are such a good read !! Livvy xxx
