December 2014 Surgeries

Good luck to all the December folks having surgery. I'll be having the sleeve on December 15th. I'm 5 days into my pre-op diet, not loving it. This site seems mostly for UK people, but I'm from the U.S. so I'm crashing a little because I like the support I see here (sorry).

Welcome MyssJones, I'm a November surgery person, but have been reading this thread. And yes it is a good support, I wish you all the best xx

Hi myss Jones your welcome from wherever you are. I'm 4 days into my pre op and not loving it either but 8 lbs down already so hopefully that liver shrinking nicely. Feel soo hungry but almost threw up when eating my grapes this morning sick of fruit and me one bowl of soup lol x

Of course you're welcome here, as long as we can mock your accent of course ;)

A few months ago I sounded out having the surgery in LA, however there were too many additional costs and I'm now glad I didn't as the band conversion ended up becoming two stage. I have relatives in California (and Mississippi) so it would have also given me a place to recover. In the end it came down to cost and ended up going to Belgium instead.

Ten days to go for me so 11 days into the pre-op diet...

I bought some low fat/low sugar custard and blended a small amount with some banana, tasted amazing. I'm not far post op but under advice, have moved onto very sloppy puree. So had some smash potato, very sloppy smash.

I have made small meals and frozen them,
I've got sloppy mash and mashed mushy peas, sloppy mash and mashed baked beans, mash and gravy, mashed swede and butternut squash and gravy, mushy jelly, mashed banana and custard, yogurt, thickish soup with no lumps.

I presume not all blended together ;)

Anything sounds better than Slimfast right now!

Thanks also from me I needed a bit more of an idea what to prepare for post op. They tell us after op in hospital wat to have but it would have been helpful to know before to prepare better.

I'm wondering if I should dust of my weaning book from when my daughter was 6 mths old?! Seem to remember there was an awful lot of butternut squash and it mainly went on the walls. Is that the idea?

Brilliant Marcus. I've lost 12lb in 16 days so their prediction of a stone in the 3 weeks is prob going to be right. You are doing great!

How long is you total pre-op diet? Also, are you doing liquid or low calorie?

Everything seems to make me nauseous except sugar-free popscicles. My protein shakes make me feel sick and so does my creamed soups/broths.

So I'm taking down protein in extremely small increments. Probably not the healthiest, but I still have to work up until my surgery so I can't be ill.:(

Haha! I've been told I have a Western Vernacular (which really means I sound like I could be from anywhere in the country).

Yes, I definitely feel you made the right decision with it being a 2 stage process. Imagine those plane tickets alone are quite steep. Nonetheless, recovering in california could have been quite beautiful.

What kind of Pre-OP are you doing?

Here you go: Pre-operative dietary restriction for patients undergoing bariatric... - PubMed - NCBI

In a nutshell...there's no evidence as to which works best or why and every centre seems to do something different!

It seems to conclude that the VLCD (Slim-Fast) option is both successful and has the least amount of people 'cheating', closely followed by the milk diet which while successful people are more likely to cheat on it. The food diet (for obvious reasons) seems to be the one which is least effective due to people not sticking to the rules. The authors also seem to conclude that the length of the diet is partly down to habits of the surgeon and partly down to the original BMI.

Beyond that it really just highlights the need for further study. It's a summary report rather than original research. Anyone fancy doing a PhD on the topic?

At least to Belgium it's just a few trains or ferry/trains depending on which route I take (this time I'm going by train and returning by train/ferry).

I'm on the VLCD Slimfast diet. Three Slimfasts/day for 21 days. 9 days until surgery.

I'm doing good on milk diet today not hungry! Forced my soup down only an hour ago and still have 1 yoghurt, 2 fruit and just under 2 pints of milk if I want it. Hope its like this for rest of days but won't hold my breath.

Only issue is a cold and a chest infection still. Antibiotics not worked so back to drs tomorrow afternoon. Does anyone know if this could affect my surgery? Ive had this nearly 3 weeks and getting worse. (Could also be why I'm not hungry today?!) I have pre op appointment on Thursday and starting to really worry now. I'm due to be admitted next Tues for surgery following day
