July 2014 Surgeries

Congrats Sophia... Glad to hear it went so well!

Good luck tomorrow Marcus, do let us know how it goes

Pre-op consult went really smoothly. Doc seemed friendly, professional and accomplished - a rare combination without arrogance. I need to stop some medicines for the day of surgery only, they're all ok for the day after. Dietician advice was slightly different to what I've read elsewhere - seems that toast is allowed as soon as I'm on blended foods and bread a week later. Two more protein drinks to go as I skipped lunch so I can have them a bit later. Midnight is the cut off for foods, some allowance for meds in the morning but I'll take most at midnight.

Emotionally I'm ok, in a 'functional' mood, mostly looking forward to the procedure no feelings of nervousness and certainly not worrying. The doc said as I'm relatively young (he thought I was in my 20s until he saw I'm almost 40 in my records) with no co-morbidities other than controlled hypertension I'm at a lower risk of complications than most patients and should be able to leave after just one night.

He asked about my background and acknowledged that as I'm from an academic background so only explained how my procedure was slightly different to normal rather than going over the procedure itself.

He will move my gastric band (which isn't open but is around the wrong part of the stomach) to the base of the pouch. This means after a couple of years if I need additional restriction I can get the band filled. It's a rare procedure to have both an RNY pouch and a gastric band but the barium swallow indicated that I was suitable for that. It's usually pricier to do this conversion but he's eager to do it and will not charge extra.

One thing I've noticed about the protein diet - I always seem to have a foul taste in my mouth and find I'm brushing my teeth 3-4 times a day to try to counter it. Does anyone else have this experience?

Hi Guys, So op went really well and liver was spot on. Had a few proba in recovery as I am allergic to some if the stronger pain killers I was in a huge amount of pain. But today is a new day, I'm feeling really positive I have woken up, had a wash down and got dressed. And the docs are really happy, said I can go home tonight. Yayyyyy x

Congrats Sophia hope all goes well with your recovery :)

I've never heard of someone having a RNY bypass AND a pouch. I can't even work out how there would be room for that! My pouch is the size of an egg - so where does the band fit around that?

The foul taste is caused by ketosis. Welcome to the world of fish breath.

I suffer with a dry mouth due to medication and the change of foods, the bad breath is sometime quite bad but I've just started to use that new toothpaste oral b pro it's the new one advertised and it's great. It says it deals with everything, bad breath, staining etc give it a go well worth it Asda has it on offer for £2:00

Little update. Wasn't allowed out yesterday as there was a complication no one told me about in the fact some of my stomach contents spilled into my body during op. Had some antibiotics and some special blood tests or something hopeful to be going home today x

Take it easy and make sure your ok before you leave at the moment your on the right place. Glad your back on here look forward to more details about the op. :)

Thanks Mouse, will do. I feel ok apart from the pain but that's manageable. I'm hoping any infections that were showing have gone. X

Oh Gosh, Ask more questions, and stay in hospital as long as you can until you have answers. Is it a leak? Is it fixed?

Hope you're okay! And hope the pain eases soon xx
