Mrs Q's band diary

Hey bex, I've noticed too, but I really researched what was best for me, and I know I made the right choice x We all have made the best choice Go banders, lol x

I agree...we made an informed decision that suits us...I don't regret my band and I feel everyone has own choice that works for them..anyone can share their experiences but I'm happy with mine!!

Xx

I've noticed a lot of negativity around the band. It's certainly going out of favour with surgeons / hospitals. I think it's partly due to complications several years after surgery (many of which are probably due to abuse of the band, rather than the band itself!) partly due to the cost of aftercare with fills / X-rays. I also suspect that the other procedures are more profitable & there's also the psychological consideration when the nhs provide bariatric surgery insofar as some patients can only be helped if they are 'forced' to change their eating habits with dumping syndrome. A band is so easy to cheat & if a persons psychosocial issues with food aren't addressed a band will always fail & the nhs do not have the resources to provide the psychological help that many patients need possibly more than they need surgery. I suspect that paid for bands are more successful than nhs ones because the person has made more of a commitment & knows the aftercare package is time limited & so is less likely to risk causing harm to themselves.
I know I made the right choice with my band, I've lost 8 stone now in a year but more importantly I have developed a much healthier relationship to food.

I researched the band for two years and was put off a few times from reading the bad stories but I kept researching and eventually I came to realise that the vast majority of people it didn't work for are the people who didn't stick to the rules and that they had done zero research and just thought it was a quick fix miracle cure which for us that have done research know it isn't,then they blame the band and not themselves.as for the surgeons the band is the cheapest option so they're not making as much as they would with a sleeve or bypass.

Amazing weight loss emma. Well done.
When I first contemplated the idea of one I never amagined how many people out there had one. I seriously thought it would be hundreds not thousands. And yes I know some people have problems but for all the thousands of people who have them I believe it's only a small percentage .
Also from what I've read part of the problem is that gp's are quite unknowledgable about them and when someone with a band goes with a minor problem related to the band it is almost seen as 'one of those things'....so the problem gets worse until there is some major problem where band needed removing etc. If the problem is nipped in the bud early on there may not be so many 'band failings'. I may be wrong, just the impression I get. X

My surgeon told me that 15% of banders are disappointed in the long term. He said that there can be minor problems with the port cable which can be rectified, the band can slip, the band can erode but with in that 15% are people wh get round the band! a use the band by grazing! swallowing down milky high calorie drinks and that band slippage generally happens by overeating...I though those odds were acceptable!

But yes I get really upset by those posting such negative posts. One person actually said on the forum that all our bands would fail!! That caused a bit of a debate lol

I have a friend and her sister who are now banded 6 years and it's all going ok

And yes. The get together is Manchester on 20th June and everyone is welcome ;-)

15% is defo an acceptable level I recon. I feel that if I do have a prob and if something did go wrong then I would have learnt new eating habits by then. I think it may be seen as just minor surgery that isn't important and like u said a quick fix. But we all know it isn't. It takes time and hard work. I still eat what I want bit in moderation and I think that's a healthy way to do it. Good luck to u all :)

LOL girls unfortunately the band always seems to get a lot of bad press...... Emma is right re the NHS ...... they are favouring the other options over the band because they don't have the resources to keep throwing at the bands.... even my surgeon on the day of my op asked why wasn't i having 'the 5* treatment' down here in Cornwall the band is still offered and i figured it cant be all that bad if they are still offering it!!! Emma is right too in saying the other options have no choice but to work, the new tummy does all the work, where as banders have to do it with their heads :) For me personally.. i have learned alot along the way too, which i'm not sure would have happened the other route. Im not saying either way is better or easier, there are always going to be down sides to all options...... there never has been lots of banders on here either to show the other side of things :) at mo there are loads of us :) safety in numbers girls LOL i hope now theres a few of us theres a more balanced veiw of the band for those new comers.

I'm sure we all went into this with our eyes open and we're all doing really well maybe the tide will turn LOL WTG us banders :) x x x xx

I did ask my surgeon about a sleeve. Which would have been an additional 3k. He would not even enter into a discussion with me about it saying he would not even consider it at my BMI..which I think was 36 at the time

He said I was borderline for a band as you should be a BMI of 40 or above but I had co morbidity factors which allowed him to do mine

It gave me a bit of confidence in him, I felt he had ethics and scruples. I'm not knocking anyone's surgeon who done the sleeve for lower BMI patients though. And sometimes I wished I had gone elsewhere for a sleeve when I struggle with the high volume of food I can scoff down at ant time. I never get that stuffed and can't eat anymore feeling :-(

I really have to exercise will power and self control to keep to the recommended food portions and sometimes I can't.

So in the Glasgow Nuffield, there is no other option but the band for us tubbies who are just not tubby enough lol

As always well said crystal x

Well I'm not sure if I've mentioned it but I'm opening a studio and gym it's all been renovated at the mo and we've just bought 15 spin bikes don't know if you've tried spin before but I love it so I've had one dropped off at my house until the gym opens.its just plonked in the middle of my kitchen lol No excuses now :)

Sorry Mrs Q hijacking again LOL maybe we should take it in turns LOL

Woooohooooo hunni..... i love the sound of a spin class :) my little gym does it and a friends (i met thru hospital) friend is the instructor...........we have a pact to go one we feel brave enough..... i just worry my energy levels would let me down..... sometimes we walk past ..the doors are flung open, low lighting and banging tunes ooooh feels so exciting.

Get those tunes on hunni and go for it....... could cook lunch at same time LOL whooop whooop hope the gym works out a treat too hunni x x x x x

sometimes i think they should offer a band for the brain lol i same as you Kisrty, can eat pretty much anything in any amounts, its self control which keeps me here. I sometimes think having a bypass (which was on offer) would have been simpler but in all honesty i think they all have their places ...we are all different and need different things............. i always felt if i could get a couple of stones off i would be fine..... and i've proved myself right..... on a plus note having that control makes me feel pretty dam good too and so must you sweetheart..............in fact all of us because without that self control we wouldn't be here having lost the amount we have lost...... if we really wanted we could cheat this band day in and day out....and because we dont shows true grit and determination wtg us !!!!

Wooohoooo go banders !!!!! :D:D:D

Loving this restriction hopefully it's my sweet spot but have a feeling might need a little tweak in a month.
