newbie susie starting out.... help

yes, post op you have to have a mainly protein diet, however, when you think that the quantities you eat in general are so small, then in relation to the rest of your diet the actual quantity of protein you have is still small.

You don't need to cut it out all together, just reduce it :) BUT that is what I was always told, you're best checking with dietician/consultant.

sorry to hear about the delay on the op, fingers crossed you will be ok by then, have they told you to keep on the pre op diet incase it goes ahead, if so this sounds like a fairly possitive option, im doing great thanks, lost 2 stone in 5wks and eating pretty normally now, still struggling a bit with bread, toast is much easier to digest so sticking to that or crackers, keep your chin up xx

thanks shel and helen, havent heard anything yet, yes im still just trying to maintain the little weight loss i have just in case its still next wednesday!!

oh susie im so sorry to hear theyve cancelled your op, fingers crossed itll be better news from the kidney guy, try and stay positive, i know its easier said than done, take care and keep me posted how things are going xxx

what a bummer. Better to have it checked than go into a major op being pumped full of drugs and yr kidneys not coping with it. Hope you dont have to wait too long

another bad news for me is i gained my 22 pounds back, i just couldnt hold it off for this period of time in the long run....

Sorry to hear about your weight gain Susie. It's understandable after all the stress.

Gordon's special diet and rules for his kidney problem that worked for him was:

Do:
Drink 1 1/2 - 2 litres of water a day
Eat fresh fruit and veg
Eat fish 3 times a week minimum (tuna, any type of oily fish)
Eat chicken (no skin, only breast, fried or grilled with vigin olive oil)
Have pleanty of garlic
Take Omega 3 supplements (the expensive ones)
Eat only brown bread
Eat vegetable or tomato soup
Eat brown pasta with tomato based sauce
Eat porrdge oats for breakfast (good for diabetes as it sustains sugar levels)
Use honey as an alternative to sweetener
Snack on very few organic flapjacks or biscuits
Eat a small handful of nuts and seeds daily
Eat lentils
Eat plenty of salad
Walk 20 mins a day
Rest a lot
Eat small meals regularly through the day

Don't:
Eat red meat at all
Drink fizzy drinks or coffee (cordial permitted)
Eat any form of chocolate or sweets
Eat crisps (no naughty types of snacks at all)
Drink alcohol at all
Smoke
Eat acidic foods (with citric acid especially)
Eat salt

You will feel bad for a few days to begin with, but he says if you follow this exactly it will help to improve kidney function and improve your diabetes greatly. However, if you take insulin you may need to check this diet with your dr, but if it's type 2 diabetes it will greatly reduce it in a couple of weeks if you stick to it and you won't need to run it by your dr.

Basically, to reduce diabetes which affects kidney cut out all the don't out of your diet. By doing this it takes the strain off your kidneys so that they don't have to work as hard. With simple foods and water it gives them time to rest .

Gordon says: "Trust me the diet works and you will lose weight too."

I hope this helps. Any questions, just let me know!

yes sara one more question, they say alot of protein intake makes the kidneys work very hard but if you have the wls you have to rely on a high protein diet so what do you do and should you take in alot of protein?? Do you know??
