Debs ramblings about her NHS sleeve...

I am not sure if you count surgery day as day 1 or the next day – so today is day 5/6 !!!!

Well I am scared to jinx it but most of yesterday and for all of today so far, I have felt tired but no pain and indeed I feel almost normal - I am so not a normal person thus it means little but I hope you get what I mean!!!

I managed to get another 7-8 hours uninterrupted sleep last night which is a real boost and makes the whole day easier to manage I feel.

Showered today without someone being ‘on guard’ was nice and I can dress without difficulty. I have been able to sleep on both sides and my back since I got home, so this is also a real help as it means I don’t wake from pain on turning in the night. I do sleep with a maternity body pillow in the bed so I can rest upon it and I am still enjoying the single occupancy of a double bed – so again that’s a bonus! Not living with another adult normally was a worry – but my friend did stay the 1st 2 nights just in case – so we were only alone from Saturday and I was feeling much more ‘with it’ then.

I’ve been fortunate I think that my bruising is minimal and the keyholes sites are neat and seem to be healing ok so far. Considering I have had a number of prior laparoscopic treatments this is a relief as I did fear it would end up as open surgery – they warned me about this and I had to sign I would agree to it if it became necessary! In 1999 my gall bladder was removed, I have also had 3-4 hysteroscopy’ s from my fertility treatment days and I had open surgery to fix an incisional hernia back in 2006. So I expected plenty of internal scarring and adhesions. Clearly didn’t faze Mr Khan! I’ve attached pic of my tummy today (sorry!!) but just to give people an idea of the after affects after 5 days.

So todays progress – woke at 7.30. Loo without issue (still no constipation – I am blessed!), showered and dressed. Started to wade through the meds!!! Adcal-D3 chewed, 14 drops of the foul vile tasting Dalivit next – shudder, then Clexane jab to my bloated belly and sometime later the dispersible lansoprazole.

Made myself a mug of decaff latte with semi skimmed milk and a sweetener but added two big spoons of Marvel to boost protein. Since then drank 500mls of liquid which was 450ml water / 50ml pure orange juice. Just had a 0% fat Actimel drink just and feeling ok.

Meds:
As I mentioned before the sickness liquid prescribed was Metoclopramide Hydrochloride – every single time I took it I was sick within 30 minutes. Retching and being sick with a newly stapled stomach isn’t great I have to say! I took it once more at home and the same happened. I called my team and the bariatric nurse said – don’t take it anymore a few people say it makes them sick! I wished she’d said this before as I’d have stopped earlier! I only complied 4 times as I want to be a model patient! My GP popped round and checked on me and prescribed a pill which melts on the gums – called Prochlorperazine Buccal which I have used 2/3 times but is very reassuring to have handy.

The Clexane stings when injecting – Walsall have given me no less than 40 syringes and ask for 2 jabs a day. It’s ok – I have learned not to rub the area once I have done the jab as it only stings more and also bruises.

I gave up with the soluble Paracetamol deciding to have the pain than the sickness feeling from trying to swallow the foul concoction! That said, a fellow WLS patient had been advised to get liquid Paracetamol and it was perfect she said. So I got a sugar free 6 plus calpol and indeed it even gives adult dose information on the side. It’s as easy as pie to ingest and I have taken it twice to help with headaches.

The only other thing I have – again a tip from a fellow WLS patient tip – is Infacol! It is sugar free so not an issue for dumping etc and its far more pleasant to swallow if wind is a problem. Themain ingredient is simeticone which is an antiflatulent. It works as an antifoaming agent and joins small bubbles of gas in the stomach to form large bubbles. The trapped gas can then be easily expelled during burping or as wind. I’ve used it a couple of times when my arm windmills were not enough!!!!!

I am at the GP tomorrow to see what to do about my Metformin (for PCOS and insulin resistance) and my Irbersartan (hyper tension medication). I know I am to stay off metformin till solid foods and even then, may not go back on them. The BP meds we will have to see – I have not taken them since Monday 8th June as instructed by the hospital – but today my BP was 116/74 and yesterday it was 122/76 so who knows.

Anyhow that’s my lengthy day 5/6 update – Ive been able to sit for an hour or more at the PC so it’s been easier than working on the app via iphone. Sorry to have gone on, and on, and on!!!!!

Hi Hun

Your story has really inspired me!! You are doing brilliantly!!

I am having my sleeve done in July and can't wait. I was just wondering what the Clexane jabs are for Hun?

Xx

Clexane injections I feel are the hospitals revenge for me being fat!!!

Of course that's not rational at all - nor is it truthful!

Clexane contains the active ingredient enoxaparin, which is a type of medicine called a low molecular weight heparin. It is used to stop blood clots forming within the blood vessels.

Surgery carries risks of blood clots and those who are larger and less mobile the risks increase again and as post op we get about a little less at the outset - jabs are prescribed.

My hospital (like its post op diet) do it to an extreme - they are very cautious so I have 2 a day for 20 days!!!!!!!!!

Many have much less for a shorter time

Hope that helps x

I have one a day for 5 days. Here's the thing, I am needle phobic :8855: After my band my husband gave me one of my shots I said "never again" so I cannot tell you what an ordeal it is but I have done my own and cannot even clamp my eyes shut.

Re the antiemetics. The stuff the hospital gave me on drip really helped but I don't know what it was lol they gave me a few tablets to take home but these made it worse, I had some Buccastem M Buccal tablets with me. It says Prochlorperazine maleate 3mg. I have used these before though very infrequently for nausea. They are primarily for nausea associated with migraine. You can buy them over the counter but you may need to lie and say its a migraine you have or walk away empty handed. My GP first prescribed these 8 years ago. So I will be asking for more as they definitely give me some relief. :)

Ah sounds like you're very organised Debs. I found that the longer the injections went on, the more they hurt. I was glad they finished when they did. I'd still rather do them though than wear stockings for 4 weeks like some people seem to have to. The liquid stage will soon be over. I eventually got round to making NAS peach barley lollies just so I could crunch. Good luck :)

Lol :)

You know I've had a theme that Walsall do everything thoroughly. (Which I don't think is a bad thing rely) Well its 2 jabs a day. AND those ruddy stockings. For 4 weeks.

If it wasn't real I wouldn't believe it either!!!

???

eeeekkkk 2 a day!!! oh thankfully I was just 1 a day fir 5 days lol bless my hubby did mine as I couldn't bare to look lol I would pinch my tum and promptly hide behind a cushion!! stockings were horrific and for 2 weeks if I remember correctly....but by the time I was allowed to take them off I had become fairly attached lol course by then they were a little looser and more comfortable and kept my legs warm :)

sounds like your doing grand hunni.....keep it up, the worst is well and truly over now x x x

Well the day over and it didn't change. I did feel ok all day. I have drunk 3 litres of fluids today. Went for a walk and Fitbit says I have done 6000 steps so that's more active thankfully. Jab done and sleep calls!

Hey Debs, you're doing so well.

You're managing a lot of fluids. I'm glad you're doing ok.

How're things today..? X

Wow, your progress is amazing. How on earth so you get 3 litres in ? My Steps are in low hundreds, I don't need a Fitbit to tell me that lol.
