Debs ramblings about her NHS sleeve...

Hello everyone. Thanks for dropping by and please never worry about as many 'side conversations' we can cram in - I love reading them so never worry :)

This is my update for Tuesday 16th - day 6 posted late as I fell asleep holding the phone !!!!

Overall generally I am well. Honestly I feel a billion times better every day.

I have visited the doctor today - all wounds examined and are fine - he was surprised at the minimal bruising and also at the fact my jabs are not bruising more. The top incision near my bra line was the gunky one and I asked him. He found an internal stitch half pushing out and said it was acting like a splinter - the body was sending gunk to push it out. He removed it and took a swab to be on the very safe side.

My blood sugar was 5 and he has taken me off metformin now and will review regularly. I have been on metformin since 2002.

My BP was 128/72 and my pulse was 54. He has taken me off all blood pressure medications for now. I have been on BP meds since 2008. He is asking me to monitor daily and record and he will review this every 2 weeks so it could be brought back if needed.

GP thinks I am a stone less in weight - he weighed me today at 110kgs. I was 111.4kgs when I was operated on last Wednesday so it would seem I have lost that fluid weight and possibly 2lbs. He hadn't weighed me since before my pre op so he was more pleased than was justified!!!

I am not going to stress the whole weight thing for a couple of weeks as for now, I just want my stomach to heal, wounds to heal and to get back to tip top. I have one day's work on 25/6/15 which he said I would be fine for. He decline to issue a sick note as he felt was ok for reduced hours in an office type role. So no SSP for me - lol!!

I can also drive!!!!!!!!!!!! He suggested short journeys to start with but he at least made me medically legal if did need to drive. I have a single baby to care for - lol actually my baby is my 16 year old daughter and sometimes being able to ferry her about would be handy. We live alone so there are few other options.

I stupidly locked myself out of my sharps bin yesterday - only me. So got a new one. So stupid.

Meds went down ok today. Don't like the jabs twice a day - it stings slightly and I really don't like the vitamin drops - but it's an irritation only.

Breakfast - milky hot drink (with a spoonful of marvel) and an actimel 0% drink.
Lunch - oxtail soup thinned with milk and strained.
Dinner - protein shake (Fortimel)

I had plenty of tea and no added sugar squash. I carry a 500ml sport bottle everywhere and it is filed and refilled during the day.

My tummy is still bloated and skin remains taught. Weird!!! I am burping for England. Indeed if burping was an Olympic event I would be a gold medal contender!!!!! So rude of me but I can't help it. I won't detail how many trumps accompany the burps! I have no wind pain in shoulders just an inflated like a 'taut drum' tum and burps.

Toilet wise all remains as day one - all elements working ok. No diarrhoea yet and no constipation. It's far easier to pee now. At the beginning it was like I couldn't focus of what muscles to use to actually pee. I would sit there and have to concentrate. Now we are back to unconscious competence at peeing. How accomplished am I !!!!!

Exercise wise - I put the washing on and pegged it out. Walked to the doctors and back and later in the day went for a walk to the park to try and work on walking out the wind. Slow and steady pace - was overtaken by an OAP but In my defence I suspect she is using performance enhancing drugs! Ended the day on 6500 steps.

I am really scared something is going to emerge that brings me down with a bump as I am surprised that I am not so poorly. I feel guilty as others are having a really tough time and I seem to be fairly ok.

That's Tuesday's update.

Debs I read your post and both laughed and cried. My eyes sprung a leak  at your health NSV's just wonderful news hun. This is what its all about. :D

See that OAP. Next time she scuttles by get the name of her dealer hun, asking for a friend of course ;) :8855:

For the rest of it, such an upbeat informative entry. You cover all bases, wish I could be as coherent lol

I think you are doing fantastic my lovely op-buddy. 6500 steps, thats a lot, and you are so so right to focus on healing and not weight at this stage. You are probably still retaining water that your body needs to heal. Hope I can catch up now I am feeling a lot better. :) but think where we are in a week!!!!!!!'

Have a fabulous day hun, might wheel out me zimmer lol if ever the rains stops and I will be thinking of you. X

What a wonderful post!

You're doing so well Debs and the way you are handling it is amazing. I hope I manage just as well as you :)

Great news re: driving. Nothing worse than having your mode of transport taken away.

Great idea to concentrate on healing for now. The weight loss will happen if you follow the rules.

What fantastic news that you've been taken off your medications! Something less to think about.

A brilliant post; I think you're going to do amazing with your sleeve..

As Weegie says; such a positive and uplifting post.

So good to hear from you

Claire xx

Hi Debs
Thank you for your detailed description of what happened en route to theatre. Its really reassuring to know the ins and outs and what to expect.

Will not be looking forward to clexane and teds stockings again - had both during and after my last pregnancy!!

We use metaclopramide at work and it's pretty useless (but cheap so always the first one to go to) - in maternity we use cyclazine next but the best antiemetic by far is ondansetron (rather expensive).

Brilliant post Debs, so pleased that things are going well. Haha I've been a victim of those speed walking, drug taking OAP's......menace to society. :D

I really hope you can permanently stay off metformin and hypertension drugs, that would be a great bonus to surgery. I've not had to take metformin since my op and the nurse said not to check my blood at all, just have the 3 monthly blood tests. She's officially put me down as diet controlled on the computer but she said they can't reverse my diabetes diagnosis for at least 12 months. I'm so happy with that.

Hope you continue to recover well, can't believe it's been a week already :)

Day 7 - Wednesday 17th June

Again another feeling ok day.

I have driven to the garden centre Webbs today to potter around and meet a friend and chat - had a skinny decaff latte and drunk it as we chatted - blended in fine in fairness I think.

All meds consumed without issue.

One walk round the block without my ipod and headphones as I can just hum along to the burps and trumps as I get rid of the trapped wind whilst on my walk. Classy bird me.:8855:

Washed 3 loads again today - washing seems to multiply in this house and we are only a family of 2!! That said I had decided to stripped all the beds as we'd had guests in the spare room. My washing lines have been full all day trying to dry it all!!

Cooked a risotto for Becky and some veg - I love risotto but didn't get bothered by preparing it etc - this still surprises me - I assume its a temporary thing - like being hexed!!!

Again toilet and showering was fine - again all as clockwork.

Food:
Breakfast: I had a decaff coffee made entirely with warm skimmed milk and 2 spoonful's of marvel and a sweetener.

About 11am I had a 0% actimel drink

About 1pm I had another decaff coffee made entirely with warm skimmed milk and 2 spoonful's of marvel and a sweetener.

About 2pm - skinny latte at the garden centre.

About 3pm I had a Fortimel protein shake - which has 200 calories and 20gms of protein

Dinner: I had chicken soup - a whole small tin and I added 25gms of natural whey protein - which is 19gms of protein and 90 calories on top of the chicken soup calories

In addition I have drunk 2 x 500 ml bottles of no added sugar squash.

I am not going to be a protein supplement devotee post the early stages - but as I am on liquids for 4 weeks I have to find ways of boosting the intake and the dietician recommended the Fortimel (prescription supplied) and the whey protein. I bought a tub of it when it was half price at Holland and Barrett and its a no flavour version - so I don't drink it stand alone - I add it to food to 'bulk' out the nutrients and not alter the taste. My temporary solution I guess.

Ready to have a rest now and cuddle my dog!

I sure feel better today that this time last week when I lay in that hospital bed things - what the hell have you done Debbie!

:D

Kirsty

Wide awake and being lashed to an operating table with bandages with my arms wide open - I felt a bit Jesus like in all honesty.

I wrote that operation summary very frankly. I was worried I had been too honest and it would scare people. But after deliberating for an age I thought I would push on and include it as I'd have preferred to have an idea about it that discover on the day ?

Do you think I need to tone it down a bit?

Thanks for dropping by honey - always nice to 'see' you xxx

Did I mention that the operating table in Belgium, besides the attached JC arms also had a a split leg section. put that with my missing pants issue, you can see my point :8855:

Tmi?

I am going to have to censor you!!!

Pimping yoghurt and now this?????!

Mine was a split leg also. Thus each leg and each arm was separately lashed. But my pants were still on when I can round. Strangely no iodine or anything but everything is above my belly button so I guess didn't go much further with the wash than this?
