February 2015 Surgeries

Hi Ruth

Glad to hear from you and that things are slowly moving. No not my first surgery, I had a band in 2006 removed in 2012-3? Worked really well then had a slippage or dilatation and lots of nighttime vomiting reflux.

Started to pile weight back on after so decided on bypass. Where did you have your surgery, and was your bleed high or lie anastosis? Mine was lower.

I have really down days when I don't feel I am progressing but I got up to make hubby cup of tea this morning so must be. Sul having district nurses every day to dress Grand Canyon but they are all nice.

I can't believe how similar are stories are.

Take care, slow but sure.

Ali xx

Lynnepoth thanks for your good wishes xxx

Hi Alison,

Yes, very similar experiences! My band also caused me problems with silent reflux, vomiting and loss of voice so had to have it removed last dec.

To be honest, I'm still trying to piece everything together - surgeon told my partner a few different versions of what went wrong so don't know which is correct yet! He said that they'd not stitched me up properly do a leak occurred, then that a large blood clot developed in the lower stomach and back pressure caused staples to come undone causing a leak, and that staples had come undone. Don't know which version is correct or whether perhaps all three are! He told me that operating close to scar tissue has its risks and that scar tissue had stopped the staples healing and had caused them to come undone.
Apparently, he took down scar tissue at start of op.

My op was in sheffield, nhs.

Stay positive and well, I know what you mean about the down days!

How are you recovering? Is your wound healing?

Ruth xx

I did a long reply to this which has disappeared, Kirsty feeling better and more energy. Wound slightly less deep in places 4 and 5 centimetres. Glad cherub you are feeling slightly better.

Beg curry for tea x

Anyone heard from Sherlock1968, his last post he had had a DVT I think?

Hi February peeps. Well I am on the mend, drove the car yesterday! Have lost 3 stone 4 since first appointment and 2 stone 11 since op. BMI now 33.

Still not able to walk far but working on that each day. Wound quite stable.

How are you all getting especially the poor Cherub xxxxx

How are you getting on Tules, all still going well x

Yes I'm ok thanks. I'm like you Alison in that I can't walk very far due to feeling so tired and light headed! I had my last drain out on thurs-it started giving me problems and was advised to go to the ward and someone would take a look. Just got a dry dressing there now.
Still on antibiotics - another 2 weeks of them before blood tests to check infection status. Generally still feeling tired and not very hungry. Only managing 2 meals per day and drinking milk or slim fast. Can't tolerate tea anymore. Meals are very small - tried one of the recommended ones by dietician of 2 fish fingers and mushy peas but left me feeling over full.
Still struggling with bladder but some think it will resolve as I recover.
Have lost 2 St now, would have lost more if they hadn't put me on TPN or over filled me. But I'm happy with that as a start! Not driving yet. Not doing much yet!

Got a shock when I went to hospital - my clothes were too big for me and all the staff commented on how well I looked and how visible the weight loss is! My partner says my wardrobes need emptying and start again with all new, but I haven't the energy to try clothes on yet. I know when I'm ready to go back to work that I will need new clothes.
Glad to hear of your progress Alison, hope your wound is improving too. Are you using a small cushion or folded towel to protect your tummy when you drive?

How is every one else doing?

Thank you all for your good wishes and support!

Ruth xx

I can take my jeans off without undoing them and there are folds of fabric around the bum, looks a bit ridiculous to be honest but want to drop another size I think before I buy new, weight loss stalling a bit, up and down by 1kg over last couple of weeks as I am feeling better and eating a bit more . Not sure that's a good thing....

Got my first fill next week so hopefully that will be the start of some sustained loss, and booked some exercise classes (gulp!)

Glad people are on the mend, next time someone tells me WLS is the"easy" option I might scream!

Be careful not to eat too much Siana58 as this will increase the size of your pouch causing it to stretch, particularly once you've got some restriction there. Once you've had your first fill and start exercising weight loss should continue at a steady rate.
I'm the same with buying new clothes yet, feels like a false economy doesn't it?!

Thanks, I am being careful but was so fearful in early days I was eating way too few calories, now I can eat a bit more I have experienced that weird over full sensation on occasion. Not enjoyable at all! I think I really need this fill to get me on right path. Still learning to prepare smaller amounts and to leave something on the plate - I keep saying to.myself"just because it's there doesn't mean it has to get eaten", old habits die hard.......

Have become fascinated by other people eating, talk about shovel it down! It's a really introspective time for me, can't quite get my head around things yet.... but it's all good

As for clothes, I am tumble drying my workaround to within an inch of their lives so they're not too baggy, probably costs as much as shopping for new lol!

Great to hear from you all. I have found that I am really savouring flavours like never before as I can eat so little. Re op I was at the limit of my clothes fixing so M finding they are fitting more comfortably now so won't have to buy for a while.

I am a classic yo yo so have many sizes on the loft.

Still no posts from Sherlock who posted on this thread at the beginning-hope he is ok.

I am so loving this bypass even with this hole in my side. Still signed off until 4 May. Need to find out if I can go back maybe in a non clinical role until I am healed. I also have a 45 min drive to work. Well I have 4 weeks off still.

I think I probably will Siana, my role is normally 2 days management and two days clinical, could not possibly do the clinical as really heavy work in Lymphoedema but sure in 4 weeks will be able to do management.

I spoke with my manager the other day who anticipates I will be off for a further six weeks after my fit note runs out next week and that I will need a phased return.
She understands what i've been through and whilst you might feel well enough it's important to needs to remember that you are still healing on the inside, have had a huge op with complications.
Got to look after yourself hun! Xx
