POSE Surgery

Well like you say, 3 stone will be great and anything else will be a bonus. I think the most important thing for me was the longevity factor. Chances are I would have kept putting weight on (judging by my family history) but I'm hoping this op will keep me level (or close enough) for the rest of my life.

Yes, mine was done for cosmetic reasons and I have had some really rude responses to my surgery, but I have paid for it so in my eyes - it's my business!

Is your surgery on the 6th? That's the same day as my first follow up appointment :)

Yes, mine is the 6th, so if you see a quivering wreck lurking in the corridor, that will be me. Feel free to stalk me out if I'm still around (Von is short for Yvonne by the way).

I agree it's the longevity that is crucial to having this surgery. I can also see exactly where you are coming from on the cosmetic front ,as had I had the opportunity when I was your weight I would have done exactly the same.

I haven't told anyone about my op (apart from my husband and children). I'm too tired to bother having to explain to folk most of whom are slim. I know in the past if I've ever mentioned having a band or such like, the usual response is "but we love you as you are", "you're not really THAT overweight", "you always dress so nicely" "it's your personality that counts" etc etc.

They don't have to live with all the disadvantages that living in an overweight body entails or pay a fortune if we want half decent clothes or not go on holiday because we don't want to wear a swimsuit in public etc. etc.

I went to M&S yesterday and was very naughty and bought a couple of tops 2 sizes too small and have my ey on a swimming costume...............

What stupid responses! It's not about how other people view you...it's about how you feel about yourself. Plus the health issues of course.

That's definitely not naughty - that's good! It will be great to have something to aim for and I bet you'll be in them quicker than you think. How good will that feel?!

Well my appt is in the evening so you will be all done by then :) I'd ask Prof if everything went okay with you but I'm sure he won't tell me (patient confidentiality and all that).

look forward to hearing how you get on though...

hi everyone, niffnash loved your post, i like you felt great very quickly after surgery, still doing good but cant wait till normal eating resumes so i can see how quickly i get the full up feeling..my letter from surgery says my bmi was 33 , i thinki previously posted on here it was 36, and yes i got comments from both a nurse and the anaethetist that i didnt really need this, i guess thinner people just dont understand..speak to you all soon, and von i will be with you all the way ..x

Stillbig is right. Its about how you feel and of course the health issues. I haven't told anyone except for my very best friend because of the comments I knew would come. Not even my Mother, as she is elderly and would worry herself to death. Luckily, with this procedure, no one needs to know except those you choose to tell. I tell others I am on a diet.

My BMI was 35, if was 40 Medicare would have paid for a lap band, but I didn't want to gain enough weight to be eligible (although, God knows I could have!) so the cost is all on me. I go to the surgeon for a check-up on Monday and will likely get a bill at that time. Not looking forward to that at all. :sigh:

Just back from my pre-op, so assuming all the tests come back ok, we're on a roll.

Saw someone from the cast of Emmerdale going up in the lift with his dressing gown on. Don't want to say who it was to protect his privacy but be assured, he certainly wasn't in for a lap band.....!!!

HI Stillbig,

I am thinking of doing precedure in Alexander hospital in Manchester. How did you find them? Did it go well?
What about post operative support?

Von, what kind of tests were the pre-op, the typical blood, urine, etc? Are you being scheduled for an endoscopy pre-op?

Bloods, urine, heart, MRSA swabs but no endoscopy.

Interestsing how different hospitals/consultants have different systems in place, mind you, I'm not complaining as I found yesterday stressful enough, although in truth there was nothing to be stressful about!!

Hello. Can I ask what POSE is? Sorry if that's a daft question...just interested. Thanks :)

Hi Lisa, if you go back to the beginning of this thread there are some links that explain the procedure really well. :)

Just found this forum last night and though I would say hi.

I am 7 months post op and have lost 47 Kilos todate with 9 kilos to go to the goal set by my consultant. I would like to see more than this come off just so it gives me some leeway while I settle down after reaching goal.

I am a just the right side of 50 single parent with a student daughter who is about to go abroard for a year to study so will really be on my own next year to encourage me to carry on as well as I have been.

Hi there,

Welcome to this forum. I see you live in N Yorkshire as well.

You have done really well with your weight loss and must be thrilled to bits.

You may want to re introduce yourself again onto the main forum as well so that your introduction is picked up by more people (this thread is mainly but certainly not exclusively a support for those that have had POSE but consequently your intro may get missed by other forum users which would be a shame).

Hi to Von and everyone else who has had or is waiting for the `Pose` surgery.

I have just been reading through your posts to gain a greater understanding of how your surgery affects you!

Thanks Von for the links - very usual and helpful information.

Wishing all those who have had Pose surgery recently, a speedy recovery.

Von - Good Luck and Best wishes with your procedure next Wednesday. Seems to me you have asked all the right questions and are pretty clued up on it hun x

Take care Love Kat x

hi abright, i went through the national obesity centre for my procedure, they referred me to manchester, but i reckon you could go there without doing that, having said that , the national obesity centre were fantastic. There support was excellent and they went out there way help anyway they could, as far as aftercare is concerned because i live in glasgow i only want to travel down again for one post op consultation, any other follow up/ support will be by telephone only..hope this helps

Well, it's Friday morning and I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for Wednesday as I have caught a rotten cold and worse, a really horrible chesty cough.

I can't believe it, especially as I'm not prone to them but I did catch the flu in December and ended up with bronchitis which again, I've never had before.

I'm really hoping that the cough goes in the next few days of I might end up having to wait till May if they are still only doing this procedure once a month at the Nuffield.

In the meantime, the dogs are booked to go on their hols from Monday and my husband has arranged to be working from home and cancelled his usual European trips, so as you can see, I'm really concerned at the moment.

I'm trying to stay positive though as we still have a few days grace, so here's hoping......

Oh, and my husband can't complain too much as he gave it to me in the first place.......lol

Oh Von, So sorry to hear about your cold :argh:

It couldn't be worse timing with all the plans made and your household re-arranged.

It could possibly delay the surgery because you don't want any breathing problems while under anesthetic. I've read that Zinc tablets shorten the duration of a cold (haven't tried it myself).

Get a lot of rest and maybe you will be better before the five days are up.

I will keep my fingers crossed for you!:grouphugg:
