Just got this snippet in a Jillian Michaels email...sounds like it might be of use to some of us so here you go x

To lose a pound, you must burn 3,500 calories. As I've said before, it's all about the math — how to burn more calories in the most effective way.
You can only do so much resistance training without damaging your muscles and impeding your results. Additionally, you can't starve the weight off: If you eat fewer than 1,200 calories a day, you will sabotage your optimal results. Therefore, cardio is weight loss extra credit. It allows you to burn additional calories without overtraining. This is one of the reasons some Biggest Loser players can still lose 20 pounds a week, even 7 weeks into the program.
Think about the math: If you are eating 1,500 calories a day — we assume your BMR without exercise is 1,600 (this is actually my BMR) — and you do two 1-hour cardio sessions that burn 500 calories each (one in the morning and one at night), the two sessions, along with your regular daily activity, will speed up your base metabolism to at least 2,000. As a result, you will have burned about 1,500 calories that day — that is, almost half a pound. At that rate you will be losing up to 3.5 pounds a week.
That said, you are bound to lose more weight during the first two weeks of any weight loss regimen because of the dramatic change in your diet and the loss of excess fluid. After that, it's all about crunching the numbers, and cardio is the key.

Boosting Metabolism
Many people suffer from the backlash that can result from years of yo-yo diets. What happens is this: When people let their calorie levels drop too low, their body's survival mechanism kicks in, lowering their metabolic set point (or basal metabolic rate). When they go off that crash diet and begin to eat normally again, they gain back any weight lost — plus. And what follows that? Yup, another crash diet.
The cycle is often very frustrating, but it CAN be reversed with time, consistency, and patience. What you'll need to do is the exact opposite of what we call shocking the metabolism; you have to allow your body time to adapt to a new metabolic set point — by being consistent, you'll force your body to adapt.
Okay, here's the game plan: First, set your daily caloric intake at 12 calories per pound of body weight. (For example, my weight is 117; 117 x 12 = 1,404 calories a day.) Then stick like glue to that calorie allowance for at least one to two months, depending on your metabolism. This will allow your body time to readjust your metabolic set point accordingly.
Now, here's the other part of the equation: The absolute best way to pump up your metabolism is to EXERCISE. You'll be burning calories not only during your workout but also up to 48 hours after — all the while increasing lean muscle tissue, which speeds the metabolism over the long term. Aim for five hours of exercise a week if possible, but no fewer than three hours a week.

Hi all my fellow banders! :wave_cry:

I`m really sad and dissapointed to see how some of you are struggling so hard with your weight loss following band surgery.

I admit myself, I wondered if I made the right decision; but then decided it was the only decision I could make. I knew I would`nt get help with weight loss surgery on the NHS, I also knew that I could just about afford to have the band fitted!

Even so I know I have to get on with it, as I have no alternative; but staying positive and upbeat is never easy when you know there are weeks when your weight has not moved. So I try different ways at looking at it. Could I do more excercise (I admit I am the worlds most sluggish person) and was never put on this earth to race around, or swim across it...........but then I thought the only thing I really like doing is dancing. Not in a class you understand where I feel everyone is watching and nudging.......but under my own steam starting with the warm ups at home...and little by little increasing the length and activity of it, I am hopefully fighting my excercise demons.

Plus I am trying to walk more.......though when the weather is as filthy as is forcast this weekend, guess I better buy myself a hoola hoop! ha ha.
:chores016:

I have also tried to change my diet about at different times of the month, which may sound crazy.....but I believe it works for me. I know some weeks when I have had a self-destruct button that I have pushed for 2 or 3 days on the trot, and eaten the `bad`foods I gave up prior to surgery.....then the guilt trip starts and depression...........same old story, can I never control my bad habits and why does my brain not learn that my tummy is full and does`nt need any more shoved into it? :17729:

But then again I get back on the wagon......reprogramme my brain again to buy the healthy choices again and eat sensibly, try to cut down on the carbs...........and hopefully I`ll have a week again where I have lost!

This gastric band lark is NOT easy! I KNEW it was`nt going to be. Especially when I see friends on here who have had other forms of bariatric surgery doing so well - and I`m truly pleased and applaud them!........but their surgery is so more drastic and they are not all perfect...........some sadly have similar problems to us...........so I guess I`ll carry on and try to have less spells of self destruct......which I have always found in the winter months always the hardest to lose weight in.

Does anyone else recognise this............diet starts 1st January..........does okay the 1st week...oh I`ve lost 5 or 6lbs......feel great..........2nd week ....lost 2lbs or maybe even only 1.......heck what is happening!.....next week.....put on 2lbs..........oh whats the point!!!!!! :ashamed0005:

So is the happy life of the yoyo dieter. 15, 20, 25 or more years later - we have the rotten stinkin health and weight problems that crept up on us over the years; and no one told me about when I was a skinny little teenager eyeing up the lads!

So I guess I am really sorry for rambling on and I DO understand where you`re coming from when you say that you have had enough, and the band is no longer working for you.........and maybe this time next year I might be saying exactly the same thing.

But I KNOW I have got to be in this thing for the long haul......and however hard I find it all and whatever way I approach it....I have got to take the rough with the smooth and DO MY BEST!! otherwise I`m still paying for my band when it would be no bl......y use to me in the coming few years.

:fear:Thinking of you all and hope we can all get through these difficult times xxxxxxxxxx

Love Kat x

Hi Kat

I know what you mean, it makes me feel sad too to see fellow banders feeling down.

WLS is NOT the easy option whichever option you chose BUT gastric banding will help you control your meal sizes. If you are prepared to committ to a healthy eating regime - most of the time (we are not saints) and move around a bit more (health permitting) you should lose weight. This would be the case without WLS too so in some ways we have an advantage.

Unfortunatly WLS does not change any psycological problems we have that effect our eating. Disordered eating and eating disorders can proceed, re-emerge, or develop after bariatric surgery. Unfortunatly for some any interventions or ways of coping are not provided as part of the aftercare. This I believe and this is only my opinion is a major issue.

Statistically we know what the average excess weight loss for banders is and no doubt for some of us that will be the reality and nothing can be done to change that. Through no fault of our own or not for want of trying :sigh:

For the rest of us we all know what we need to do and we are all in this together. Any strugglers dig deep, if you have demons let us all help you if we can, if you need help from your provider - ask for it. If you need a fill speak to the 'people' and get one.

Neen started this thread to get us all together and help and encourage each other, so lets do this.

Sending all fellow banders a group hug :grouphugg:

Well said Kat and Mazza.

Whether by choice or otherwise, the band is what we have. It took me a long time to get my head around the fact that I was not going to have a sudden and drastic loss in weight. However, things happen for a reason...and all any of us can do is try our very best.

Bypassers do not always have it easy...and statistically their patterns of weight loss and those of banders even out eventually. The thing for me with the band is that if you get further out and need more restriction then you can ask for a fill - if that happens with a bypasser then it may not be such a 'simple' answer.

I agree with Mazza that the sad thing you do not get, be it with the band or bypass, is the support in dealing with the emotional/psychological aspects of weight loss surgery. It is either not there or is used pre op as a means of gate keeping the waiting lists. I wonder how many people fall by the way side because of their inability/refusal/etc. to come to terms with the reasons why they came to need surgery as a last resort? We all struggle with those demons from time to time and without the advice/guidance/information/support you get from sites like, this how many more would fail?

This is not about a them and us situation - bypass versus band. It is about each and everyone one of us - as individuals who embark on this journey - for whatever reason. we are all going to have our trial and tribulations, challenges and successes. Just like life it is not always a straight and smooth road.

I hope we all get there in the end - however we get there.

Best wishes to all.

Hi everyone - I am now 4 and a half weeks post band and have my first post-op consultation with my surgeon this coming Wednesday. Can anyone tell me what I should expect? I am losing weight (albeit slowly) at the moment so do you think he will recommend I have my first fill or will I have to stop losing weight first? I lost 1 and a half pounds this week, 2 last week etc.

Good luck with your appointment Mel but every provider and everyones journey is different. Some will get a fill on their first appointment and some won't.

Well done on your losses so far x

Well said Kat and Mazza. I really agree with the psychological issues . I didnt think i did have psychological links to food until i got my band . But Ive had a chat with a friend who is a therapist and feel a lot better since.

Hey folks....still here....just totally messed up...bands not working it's either got a leak or come undone...been in hospital in the last week with chronic abdominal pain but no outcome on why...back to see surgeon on thursday am....gaining weight soooooooooo fast :(

Sorry to here that lost. I hope they find out what's going on for you soon xxx

Trouble is I get very introverted and find it hard to open up to people when the going gets tough instead of sharing, plus also suffer with the `winter blues`and don`t cope too well with the winter months.
Me too flower, sucks doesn't it. It's always lovely to hear from you though sweetie xx
Anyhoo........never mind that, today I spoke to my dietician, who incidentally is very happy with my progress, I have been losing little by little (guess I was expecting it to be more dramatic than that) I have made an appointment to go and see her at the end of next month, better save some money for the petrol.....its now four months since I had my band fitted and I have lost 30lbs in total since starting with the milk diet....so I should be pleased even though it seems slow, it is coming off and not going on.
WOOHOO well done you :)

Rachel - good to know that your getting plenty of compliments, I`m looking forward to the day when I can afford some new clothes in smaller sizes instead of wearing stuff that looks quite baggy now.....and maybe perhaps I might get a compliment - who knows!
Awww thank you!! I've been very fortunate in that two other family members have been dieting over the last couple of years and been saving all their clothes for me, so I have a constant stream of clothes in different sizes as I'm shrinking!! People can see the difference so much more when your clothes fit you properly, I could never have afforded to buy all those things so perfectly understand why you're holding off on your spree. You are going to have so much fun once you hit the shops :D

It seems like a lot of people are struggling at the minute, I hope things improve soon for all. I feel like that myself to a certain extent, even though I tell myself that it'll take time and poss many fills, it is disheartening that it's taking more to fill me. I will be getting another fill in 3 weeks, so that should help.

I ate 2 eggs scrambled and 2 rashers of bacon for lunch and for some reason I feel so sick, I have them quite often but never had this reaction before. Maybe it's wind and doing some housework will shift it? Better give it a try.

Hope you're feeling better now hunny. You're lucky to be able to eat eggs like that, for some reason that's one food I have to be ultra careful with. Funny how we're all so different isn't it. :)

You're doing great though Sarah 3 weeks will fly by xxx

I am determined not to get hung up about scales and am going by how clothes feel and how I feel in myself health wise. For example today I tried on a work jacket which I could not do up before the op and today it fitted with ease. That is how I am measuring how things are going. If you weigh yourself do not forget that if the scales are not moving you may be losing inches and that is what I feel is happening with me.

Well done Tranquil that's brilliant!!!
I have to say right from the start of my journey I've measured myself and the inch loss really spurs me on when the scales aren't moving.

Keep up the great work flower xx

Glad to hear you're feeling better hun. I go to see my food psychologist in April and can't wait. Here's to a successful week for everyone xxxx

Morning ladies and gents, I hope you've all had a lovely weekend. Thanks Rache, I think it was my blood sugar dipping for some reason.

I went to the dietician on Saturday, she thinks I'm eating too many carbs (I have a wrap or pitta bread for lunch most days and a jacket potato for dinner twice a week), so I asked for a diet sheet to help me. She also agrees that I need another fill and was surprised that I could eat as much as I could. So today is the start of new eating habits, and I'm currently tucking into prawns, lf cottage cheese, pineapple and lettuce, mmmmmm. According to their scales I've lost 2st 8lb now :)

Has anyone heard from Lostinmy30's? I was wondering how she got on last week?

Hi Sarah

Glad you have got some good advice re your eating, I was in the same boat as you able to eat too much - so we do dont we!

My last fill has really had an impact so hopefully your next one will, do you know when it will be?

Good luck with your new eating habbits x

I havent heard from her but I will conact her via facebook and see how she is.
