bypass daily menu -

That's just how I was feeling dimond, it seemed like i could eat anything and with no restriction, but the last week or so now I am eating proper foods like especially meat and fish, I feel the restriction again. I also was really scared that the bypass hadn't worked but It seems to have settled back down to a very small meal every 3-4 hours and that suffices, so I am sure it will settle with you soon also... xxx

I'm a lot better today Maya , know to plate up my own meals again in future. When I say I feel better , I don't look better as face is blotchy as hell think from the retching.

As I side, has anyone else, since they have had the op, noticed that they feel the cold a lot more?

Ah maya another batch cooker lol!! If you look at my menus you will see home cooked mince or fresh fish and stuff or turkey steaks. Before the bypass I lived on junk and ready meals. But now I buy really good quality meat and fish and cook a batch and divide it up into portions so that I always have good healthy food on hand, I am actually beginning to enjoy cooking and preparing my food which for me is just such a turnaround. Just another positive about the bypass for me definitely...

I was exact the same Amanda, always ate Brown food you just bunged in the oven- nutritional value nil! Now I only shop the fruit, veg, dairy and meat/fish section in supermarkets my bill has gone down and not just because I eat less its soo much cheaper buying proper food! Only really cooked since my bypass made me care about myself once again xx

Snap maya!! I definitely spend less on groceries now, and yet everything I buy is good quality food. I try and avoid any sort of processed stuff, and am really aware of what I am putting into my body. Life changing huh!! xx

Had a rough few days been sick, I think from not chewing my food properly, I think it's hard to break a habit of a lifetime :(

Back on track today though,

B-150g cottage cheese
L-4 cracker bread with 10gr vegetarian pate
T-half coop cauliflower cheese

Snack-small apple

Drinks-3xcoffee, 2 glasses water and 1 NAS pink grapefruit juice.

Emma, it is hard breaking old habits. Ive been exactly the same with my eating too

I am cold all the time the winter is looming and thinking bout hibernating, I look very pale now that the tan has faded. Don't worry too much bout dairlea dunkers they not too bad. ;)

Yes girls thinks thats why i haven't lost as much as some people, because i always ate healthy before that just bigger portions I always had fresh fruit n veg and meat and fish, very little fried all grilled or oven baked.

Maya hope you enjoy tha date dolled upto the nines girl way to go lknock him dead xx

Eating too fast is definitely my biggest problem. I eat so much slower than I use too but still too fast but I keep trying every day to slow it down. I think it's good to keep re reading the rules as later on when things settle down you do start to forget things and pick up bad habits again but the good thing about a bypass rather than a diet is you never lose your tool and can't start using to it's best again at any time :)

Hope you are having a better day Chrisa.

Have fun on your date Maya.

What's the ideal amount of calories/carbs/protein per day for bypassers?

You know I don't know for sure. Others might but I don't think there is an ideal as such, especially as each provider says something different. My provider doesn't say anything at all lol. They are a bit useless when it comes to nutrition well they have been for me. I've done my own research, reading papers published on it etc and found a general thing to aim for around 800 calories a day in the first six months - not that it's a problem at all if you go over that. In fact for a woman anything up to 1200 is fine but if you have good restriction 800 might be hard to manage so you have to work at it. I do sometimes, I average around 750 but then some days I don't make more that 550. My provider says don't worry about carbs, obviously don't go mad on them but a slice of bread here and there is fine but to careful with rice and pasta because it swells etc but they have no limit. For myself I put a limit of 60g's a day, I did have it set a 70 but I've recently reduced them to 60 and up my protein. That's just a personal choice, you can choose to go higher or lower or maybe your provider says something different but I do think it is healthy to have some carbs a day because otherwise you can lack energy. Something I'm feeling a lot lately. Some wholegrain crackers and the natural carbs from fruit seem to help but unrefined carbs aren't that good for your anyway. Protein is something that most providers seem to agree on, the more the better. I do my best to get over 45g's a day but my ultimate aim is 80g's a day. I can't eat enough to get that naturally at the moment. Once I intensify my exercise I shall probably use protein water and more shakes to try and hit target.

So anyway that's my understanding of it and my targets. I think other people have different views and feelings but if in doubt it's always best to follow your teams suggestions as the get there ideas from success of their patients. You might have better luck than me at getting advice from them lol :) x

Thanks Shelley, I seem to average 500 cals a day at the mo, but it's early days still.
My Carbs never seem to be between 40 and 50g per day and it's not from rice/pasta/bread so I think I'm ok there.
Protein is my big problem because I don't drink milk and I eat very little meat....any suggestions?

Oh yeah 500 calories is fine in the beginning, well I use to get between 300-500 a day for around the first 8 weeks. You'll find your carbs come from things like mash potato in the beginning too when you move on to solid food you can get more from wholegrain foods etc. Actually a really good unrefined carb that is yummy and good at releasing energy slowly is sweet potato, you might have that already, if not try it or mashed swede and cauliflower with philidelphia extra light is yum. As for the protein adding things like light cheese to meals helps, babybel light's have 5g's of protein and if you melt them in your hand a bit before you open them they go down well, also marvel skimmed milk powder is good. You can sprinkle that into sauces/soups etc and that add extra calcium and protein. Do you drink soy or almond milk? I can't drink very much milk since the surgery so I changed to soy but now I've changed to almond milk which is really nice and very easy to digest. I use reflex's diet protein shake too - half of one of those gives you an extra 100 calories a day plus 18 extra grams of protein. Reflex also do protein shots and protein flavoured water. I really like the Reflex brand as it's low in sugar so your calories aren't coming from that plus no risk of dumping. You can get unflavoured protein powder and add it to soups and things too. I think you've said you use tofu? I add silken tofu to home made soups on top of other ingredients, it thickens it and adds loads more protein. Plus of course as you get further into mash and solid food more quorn products available for you to use. Hope that helps a bit. Protein is important but in the beginning it's mainly about learning to eat again and getting in enough fluid, the rest comes with time :) x

Agree about the bad habits thing! I still eat too fast even though I actively try and eat slowly and carefully, it is a really hard one to break... But rarely anything makes me feel sick or anything. I had a tablespoon of potato salad tonight with my dinner, and that didnt make me dump or feel sick and it had 14gms of fat in it!! I despair sometimes....

B 100mls skim milk
L 50gms Sardines, 1 melba toast
D 75gms turkey ham, 100gms potato salad & 1 tomatoe
S 1 L/F Laughing cow cheese triangle
S 3 x S/F polos

Protein 69.4 - Calories 611 - Carbs 27.9 - Fat 24.1
Drinks 500ml 40gm protein water - 1 litre NAS Squash - 1 cup of green tea - cup black coffee

Not a very healthy day today that potato salad was not a good food choice at all. It tasted divine, but was far too reminescent of old food tastes, and very scary as it didn't upset me at all......
